Nel ASA's Order Book and Its Income Statement Are Moving in Opposite Directions
Published on 10/31/2026 at 09:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deNel ASA has a USD 12 million electrolyser order on its books and a NOK 1.314 billion backlog behind it. What the Norwegian hydrogen group does not have is revenue anywhere near those figures — and that gap is the single most important thing for anyone weighing the stock.
Revenue from customer contracts came in at NOK 112 million in the third quarter of 2026, down 63% year on year. Management pinned the slide on lower activity in the alkaline segment, with stronger PEM sales unable to plug the hole. The split matters: progress in one part of the business is not the same as a recovery across the group, and the PEM advance is a counterweight rather than proof of a company-wide turnaround.
Losses Sit Alongside the Top-Line Drop
The bottom line offers no relief. Nel posted an EBITDA of NOK -93 million and a net loss of NOK -141 million for the quarter. Those figures make the loss position a yardstick in its own right, separate from the revenue decline, and any future improvement will be judged on whether it shows up in both total sales and earnings.
Order intake for the period reached NOK 253 million, and the backlog stood at NOK 1.314 million. New bookings lay the groundwork for later revenue, but they do nothing to repair the weakness in business already invoiced. Investors are therefore looking at two distinct measures — what has been ordered and what has been earned — and only one of them is currently moving in the right direction.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?
A Confirmed Contract, a Memorandum, and the Space Between
The clearest signal came roughly three weeks ago, when Nel Hydrogen US booked an order from an unnamed US technology customer for containerised PEM electrolysers and associated services worth about USD 12 million. Delivery is scheduled for 2027. That is a firm commercial commitment, yet the distance between signing and shipping is precisely what keeps it out of the current numbers.
A separate arrangement with Rheinmetall deserves different treatment. The non-binding letter of intent, also announced about three weeks ago, covers a feasibility study into decentralised production of renewable synthetic fuels, starting in Norway. The two companies will examine technical and economic viability, and any pilot or further step requires mutual agreement. It should not be read as a fixed order; whatever economic contribution it eventually makes depends on decisions still to be taken.
New Hands at the Top
Responsibility for converting that pipeline into cash will change hands mid-flight. Chief financial officer Kjell Christian Bjørnsen takes interim charge of the company from 1 November 2026, with Torbjørn Berg — previously VP Finance — stepping in as interim CFO. Morten Holum has been named to succeed Håkon Volldal as chief executive no later than 1 May 2027.
Nel ASA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
A orderly succession answers the leadership question. It does not answer the commercial one: how Nel closes the gap between a swelling order book and a shrinking top line, and how it pulls the alkaline business and its losses back on course. The handover is an organisational frame, not a substitute for operating progress — and the execution of confirmed orders, rather than uncommitted project ambitions or capacity plans, is where that progress will first become visible.
