CLSA has slashed its price target on Nio's Hong Kong-listed shares from HK$55 to HK$29 — a 47% cut — while keeping its "Outperform" rating intact. The move, reported yesterday, captures the split-screen reality facing investors: genuine operational strides on one side, a markedly more cautious valuation on the other.

Neither half of the analyst action should be read in isolation. Focusing only on the lower target misses the retained positive recommendation; focusing only on the rating ignores the sharply reduced price objective. What CLSA has delivered is a more conservative view of where the stock can go, not a retreat from its constructive stance.

The shares finished Friday at €2.94. That euro quote applies to a different trading line than the Hong Kong target, and the two should not be lined up side by side without accounting for the currency mismatch.

Firefly Extends Its Reach — and Its Range

On the product front, Nio's Firefly brand introduced a larger battery option yesterday, lifting CLTC-rated range to 560 kilometres. Existing owners can make the swap too, at a stated price difference of 17,000 yuan. The upgrade therefore reaches beyond the new-car showroom to vehicles already on the road.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nio?

What that expansion does not yet demonstrate is incremental sales volume or a profit contribution. An improved offering and its commercial success are distinct propositions — a distinction that matters when weighing the equity.

Firefly had already logged a concrete milestone earlier in the week: on Monday it opened its first standalone location outside China, at Bangkok's centralwOrld mall, and simultaneously launched the revised right-hand-drive Comfort Plus variant in Thailand at 799,000 baht. A store that is open for business and a manufacturing plan that is merely under review sit at very different stages of maturity.

ES8 Passes 160,000 Cumulative Deliveries

Nio also reported cumulative deliveries of 160,000 units of the third-generation ES8, with the milestone vehicle handed over in Xi'an yesterday. The figure documents operational progress; on its own, it says nothing about profitability.

Separately, Nio President Qin Lihong cited Wilson data on 17 October pointing to 111,638 Chinese end-customer sales across the group's three brands in the third quarter of 2026. Nio itself reported 109,178 group-wide deliveries for the same period. The two numbers measure different things and should not be conflated.

Nio at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Thailand: Feasibility Study, Not a Factory

Reports on Wednesday indicated that Nio is examining the feasibility of local vehicle assembly in Thailand. No investment decision has been taken, according to those reports. That caveat is the crux: a feasibility review opens a strategic option but represents neither a committed investment nor the start of local production, so no concrete output contribution can be inferred from it.

Taken together, the picture is one of a company broadening its lineup and weighing further options, without any confirmation of a higher valuation. That restraint is precisely what a halved target paired with an unchanged "Outperform" rating is meant to convey.
