Novo Nordisk's Liver Bet Runs Through 2029 as Pipeline Deals and CFO Exit Reshape the Story
Published on 11/07/2026 at 12:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deNovo Nordisk has spent the past week stacking up announcements across three fronts — clinical evidence, commercial partnerships and executive succession — yet the piece of news that matters most for its long-term revenue story won't arrive until the end of the decade. Confirmatory clinical outcome data from the second part of the ESSENCE trial are not expected until around 2029, leaving the MASH opportunity anchored to a timeline far longer than the recent flurry of disclosures might suggest.
A Large Market, but a Small Diagnosed Base
Analysts peg the global MASH market at between $15 billion and more than $20 billion by 2030–2032. Wegovy could capture several billion dollars in additional annual sales in that space over the medium term — but those projections hinge on diagnostic capacity expanding and on commercial execution holding up.
The gap between medical need and reachable demand is stark. Novo estimates the relevant patient population in the United States at roughly 22 million people. Madrigal, by contrast, cites about 530,000 diagnosed patients in fibrosis stages F2/F3 as of mid-2026. The two figures describe different groups, but together they underline how much of the opportunity depends on patients actually being identified and treated.
Near-term contributions from MASH are expected to stay modest through 2026–2028, with a more solid revenue stream potentially emerging from 2030 onward — provided diagnostics and market share both grow.

Observational Data Offer Support, Not Proof
On the clinical side, Novo released observational study results for Wegovy at a 2.4 mg dose in adults with MASH, showing associations with reductions in weight, liver enzyme levels and blood glucose. The company was careful to flag that the retrospective, non-randomized design permits no conclusions about cause and effect. Relative to resmetirom, the data pointed to advantages on weight loss as well as liver enzymes and blood sugar.
Whether those observed benefits translate into a durable competitive edge will depend on confirmation in rigorous clinical outcomes — which is where the 2029 ESSENCE readout comes back into focus.
Novo has also lined up a heavy conference schedule. At The Liver Meeting in Denver, running November 5–9, the company plans to present twelve scientific abstracts covering semaglutid and the investigational agent Efruxifermin, an announcement made on October 28. At ObesityWeek, scheduled for November 14–17, 2026, it intends to showcase data from 26 abstracts, including analyses of CagriSema and real-world evidence on the Wegovy tablet — a slate confirmed on October 29.
Partnerships Cut Both Ways
Commercial news has moved in two directions. Abbott announced Thursday an expansion of its collaboration with Novo to market Plosbrio in Singapore and additional Asia-Pacific markets; the product is a second brand of Ozempic-semaglutide that Novo develops and manufactures.
At the other end of the ledger, Novo notified Korro Bio on Tuesday that it is terminating their research collaboration and license agreement effective February 1, 2027. According to Korro Bio, the upfront payment already received and other amounts paid are non-refundable.

A New Hand on the Finance Reins
Leadership is shifting as well. Novo said Wednesday that Chief Financial Officer Karsten Munk Knudsen will leave the company at the end of the year. Luigi La Corte, currently CFO of Galderma, has been named as his successor.
For investors, the investment case now turns on two variables: how quickly the pool of treatable patients expands, and whether forthcoming clinical results deliver on the promise the observational data have only hinted at.
