Novo Nordisk's Oral Wegovy Bet Divides the Street as Liver Data Pile Up

Two fresh price-target hikes landed on Novo Nordisk today, yet they point investors in opposite directions. SB1 Markets lifted its target to DKK 345 from DKK 335 while keeping a buy rating, offering no additional rationale for the move. Bernstein, by contrast, raised its target to DKK 223 from DKK 203 but stuck with an underperform call — analyst Justin Smith's estimates now sit as much as 17% below the analyst consensus.

The split turns on a single question: can the oral Wegovy franchise generate enough extra earnings to offset weakness in injectable GLP-1 drugs, where Bernstein sees market-share losses and thinning profitability capping the business outlook despite upgraded guidance?

The pill is delivering where the syringe is not

Third-quarter 2026 numbers give the bulls something concrete. The Wegovy tablet posted revenue of DKK 5.39 billion, against a consensus of DKK 4.96 billion, according to BioPharma Dive. The injectable version, meanwhile, saw its US sales decline in the same period at constant exchange rates. That contrast is why the pill matters so much — provided it can translate into durable incremental demand and a richer product mix.

On Wednesday the company lifted its full-year 2026 guidance: adjusted revenue and adjusted operating profit are each now expected to move between ?2% and +2% at constant currencies. The range leaves room for either a modest contraction or moderate growth.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

The quarter itself told a two-sided story. Adjusted operating profit climbed 27% at constant currencies, while reported operating profit fell 9% on the same basis, dragged down by non-cash impairments of DKK 8.7 billion.

Liver data add a second front

Novo also used the week to broaden the case beyond obesity. At the AASLD liver congress, running 5–9 November in Denver, the company presented real-world data on Wegovy in adults with MASH. The PLATINUM-Truveta analysis linked treatment with 2.4 mg semaglutide to lower liver enzyme levels, reduced weight and better blood sugar readings. After six months, the analysis showed an average weight loss of 8.6 kg, comparing semaglutide with resmetirom. Novo is careful to frame these as associations drawn from care data, not a proven causal treatment effect.

The liver findings are part of a twelve-item congress programme on semaglutide and the investigational drug efruxifermin, announced on 28 October and spanning both real-world analyses and clinical MASH research.

Further afield, the company has slated 26 contributions for ObesityWeek, set for 14–17 November 2026. Those include analyses of CagriSema, real-world experience with the Wegovy pill, and research into semaglutide in children aged six to under twelve.

Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Distribution as the swing factor

Beyond the molecule itself, attention is shifting to how patients actually get the drug. Financial commentator Niels Lunde describes a commercial ecosystem of digital sales channels, new payment pathways and partners built around Wegovy. CEO Mike Doustdar said on Wednesday that NovoCare and its partners should also be deployed for a future CagriSema launch — potentially extending the distribution structure well beyond Wegovy.

Lunde attaches a condition to the thesis: the model must create a competitive advantage rather than simply add cost. That is where the two analyst camps meet. Broader access strengthens Novo's case if it converts into profitable demand; persistent margin pressure would instead vindicate Bernstein's caution.
