Novo Nordisk Wins European Backing for Two Specialty Drugs as CagriSema Outperforms Eli Lilly Rival

Novo Nordisk has secured a pair of favorable regulatory opinions in Europe while simultaneously posting late-stage data that strengthens its hand against Eli Lilly in the race for the metabolic-therapy market. The twin developments, alongside a widening artificial-intelligence partnership and a fresh philanthropic commitment, sketch a company working to diversify well beyond its flagship diabetes and obesity franchises.
European Committee Greenlights Hemophilia and Growth Candidates
The European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use has recommended marketing authorization for FREHEMGO, whose active ingredient is denecimig. The therapy is intended for adults and children living with hemophilia A, with or without inhibitors. Novo Nordisk expects to bring the product to the first European countries in the fourth quarter of 2026, with a broader EU rollout slated for early 2027.
Supporting the filing, results from the Phase 3b FRONTIER5 trial appeared in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. The study turned up no unforeseen safety concerns following a direct switch from emicizumab in patients aged twelve and older.
A second positive opinion covers Sogroya, based on somapacitan, for once-weekly administration in European children with idiopathic short stature and persistent growth failure. That recommendation still requires formal sign-off from the European Commission before commercial launch can proceed.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?
CagriSema Delivers Head-to-Head Win
On the clinical front, Novo Nordisk reported that CagriSema achieved an estimated average weight reduction of 12.4 percent in patients with diabetes during a late-stage trial, according to a September 21 announcement. At a 1-milligram dose, the candidate edged out tirzepatide, the competing therapy from U.S. rival Eli Lilly. In a separate obesity study, the same 1.0-milligram dose produced 21 percent weight loss versus placebo — a result the company views as pivotal to defending its leadership in weight-management treatments.
AI Alliance and UNICEF Expansion Broaden the Story
Technology has become a parallel pillar of the strategy. A September 16 agreement with Anthropic will see Novo Nordisk test that company's Claude models across drug discovery, development workflows and software engineering, part of an effort to speed the identification and refinement of new medicines.
The company's social footprint is expanding too. On September 22 it broadened its partnership with UNICEF, committing an additional $18 million between 2026 and 2030 for prevention programs across seven countries, with a reach targeting more than 80 million children.
Management Sets Sights on 2030 and Beyond
Chief executive Mike Doustdar has made portfolio diversification an explicit goal, aiming to move the company's profile past its dominant diabetes and obesity strongholds. At its capital markets day, management laid out a target of launching more than five blockbuster medicines by 2030, with pipeline revenue projected to exceed DKK 150 billion by 2035. That forecast rests on internal, risk-adjusted projects and excludes any future acquisitions. Executives also stressed that the balance sheet leaves room for larger takeovers.
Shares Search for a Floor
Investors have yet to reward the ambitious roadmap. The stock closed Friday at EUR 34.05, and pre-market indications put it at EUR 34.07. Year to date, the shares have shed 23 percent and now sit 38 percent below their 52-week high. Market participants are watching closely to gauge how far forthcoming products such as FREHEMGO and label expansions can offset the anticipated pressure on margins and revenue from the company's existing top-selling drugs.
