OHB's Order Book Speaks Louder Than Its Handshakes
Published on 11/07/2026 at 13:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deA EUR 554 million development contract from the European Space Agency and a probe now circling an asteroid 60 kilometres out are doing the heavy lifting for OHB SE's investment case. Next to those concrete markers, a freshly signed letter of intent with Japan's Astroscale Holdings reads as a promise rather than a result.
A Memorandum Without a Price Tag
OHB and Astroscale put pen to paper on October 28, committing to explore cooperation across space safety, space situational awareness and in-orbit services. The company's announcement carried no order values and no binding volumes — the document exists to test where the two firms might work together, not to book revenue.
The scope is broad by design. Space safety and the tracking of objects in orbit sit alongside in-orbit servicing as the three areas up for discussion. Nothing in the memorandum obliges either side to place a contract.
Hard Numbers From Noordwijk
Far more tangible is the mandate OHB System picked up from ESA on Wednesday: development of the next-generation Sentinel-3 topography satellites for the Copernicus programme. The award is worth EUR 554 million, with an option attached for a second spacecraft.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?
That option matters, but it is exactly what its name implies — conditional. Investors who treat the extension as already won are leaning on something that has not yet been exercised. The confirmed award deserves the greater weight; the option is upside, not baseline.
Hera Reaches Its Endgame
The second operational yardstick comes from deep space. Hera, the ESA probe built by OHB, has entered the final phase of Europe's planetary defence mission after transmitting its first close-up images from roughly 60 kilometres away. The spacecraft is already operating in the Didymos asteroid system, and the company confirmed the transition to the closing stage of the mission on the same day.
Two very different tests of execution now sit side by side: a development programme still on the drawing board and a mission already delivering data. Further milestones on either front would shore up confidence in OHB's technical delivery. A stall on either would do the reverse.
Splitting the Signal From the Noise
The stock slipped 3.4% on the last trading day, a move that cannot be tied to the Astroscale memorandum. Nor should it be read as a verdict on the ESA win or on Hera's progress. Share-price swings of that size say little about whether a multi-year satellite development stays on schedule or whether an option gets taken up.
What actually moves the needle is verifiable output. For Sentinel-3, that means development milestones and, eventually, a decision on the second satellite. For Hera, it means the remainder of the final mission phase. Execution risk cuts both ways — projects that fall short of investor expectations can erode trust just as surely as successful steps can build it.
Beyond the Flagship Contracts
OHB has been widening its partnerships on other fronts. Together with Rheinmetall it set up OHB Rheinmetall Space Networks GmbH, a joint venture split 50-50 between the two groups. Roughly two weeks ago it also agreed a strategic partnership with MediaMobil Communication GmbH, under which OHB is acquiring 25% of MediaMobil's shares through a capital increase — the stake forming part of that wider tie-up.
OHB SE at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
None of these arrangements carries the contractual certainty of the Sentinel-3 award, and they belong in a different category of commitment. They broaden the group's reach; they do not yet add to the order book in the way a signed ESA contract does.
What to Watch on the Calendar
The next confirmed financial date is November 12, when OHB publishes results for the third quarter and the first nine months of 2026, accompanied by a presentation and a conference call. Two weeks later, on November 25, ESA is due to release detailed imagery of both asteroids — a date OHB flags in its Hera update.
Between those two appointments, investors will get both halves of the story: the numbers behind the business and the pictures from the mission. The memorandum with Astroscale, for now, sits outside both.
