OHB's Record Italian Contract Can't Mask the Pain of a Post-Rights-Issue Slide

OHB shares trade near oversold levels ahead of Q2 results, with record backlog and PRISMA win offset by post-capital-increase dilution.

The disconnect between OHB SE's order book and its share price has rarely been starker. While the Bremen-based space group locked in a landmark Earth-observation mission for the Italian space agency, its stock closed Friday at €230.00, down 1.71 percent on the day and roughly 67 percent below the 52-week high of €688.00 touched in May.

That gap between operational momentum and market sentiment is now the defining feature of the OHB investment case. The shares have shed around 17 percent in the past month alone, and the technical picture has turned decisively bearish. The Relative Strength Index sits at 32.0, hovering just above the 30 threshold that chartists traditionally read as oversold — a level some technicians interpret as a precursor to a potential bottom, provided the fundamentals cooperate.

The €484 Million Question

Much of the recent weakness is being attributed to the after-effects of the capital increase completed in June, which priced new shares at €300.00 — comfortably above where the stock now trades. That rights issue, which raised roughly €484 million, has left the market digesting both the dilution and the strategic direction for the proceeds.

Management has indicated that a substantial portion of the fresh capital will be directed toward industrialising production capacity and advancing launch-vehicle projects. Investors, however, are still waiting for more granular detail on deployment. The stock now trades below its 200-day moving average of €243.97, and the €230 support zone is expected to be the immediate battleground in the sessions ahead.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

PRISMA Second Generation Lands

Operationally, the news flow has been constructive. On 30 July, OHB confirmed that its Italian subsidiary, OHB Italia, had been selected by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) as prime contractor for the PRISMA Second Generation Earth-observation mission. The contract covers the complete satellite system, with launch targeted by the end of 2031.

The win reinforces OHB's standing in hyperspectral Earth observation and secures long-term capacity utilisation for its Italian operations. Thales Alenia Space and Leonardo are slated to contribute data for environmental monitoring and disaster-management applications, underscoring the programme's institutional significance.

Thursday's Interim Report as the Next Catalyst

All eyes now turn to Thursday, 6 August, when OHB publishes its second-quarter and first-half results. The market will be looking for answers on three fronts.

First, the order backlog: at the end of Q1, OHB reported a record figure of over €3.3 billion (the secondary source puts it at €3.35 billion). The key question is whether that book has continued to grow — and how efficiently the group converts it into revenue and profit.

Second, margins: following the capital increase, profitability in the Space Systems division is under particular scrutiny. Investors want evidence that scaling is stabilising operating margins rather than eroding them.

Third, capital allocation: with the rights issue complete and voting rights now spread across 21 million shares, the market expects concrete details on how much of the new funds have already been committed to production and the defence segment.

Beyond the Numbers

Two further dates are worth flagging. On 10 August, Rocket Factory Augsburg is scheduled to launch its RFA ONE rocket, a project in which OHB holds a stake. A successful flight could provide a tailwind for the broader "access to space" theme and, by extension, sentiment around the stock.

Looking further out, the EU's IRIS² connectivity programme remains a structural growth driver for the third quarter, with OHB part of the core team for the MEO satellite constellation in medium Earth orbit. Management will also present to institutional investors at the Berenberg & Goldman Sachs German Corporate Conference on 21 September.

Should Thursday's report confirm the growth trajectory, the stock could attempt a test of the 200-day line from below. Until then, the immediate support level around €230 looks set to determine the near-term direction.
