OMV Raises Refining Guidance as Chemicals Division and Analyst Downgrade Cloud the Picture
Published on 11/08/2026 at 18:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deOMV has lifted its full-year refining margin forecast, a move that lands alongside a mixed third-quarter scorecard and a fresh broker downgrade that sent the stock slightly lower on Friday. The Austrian energy group did not, however, offer any guidance for 2027.
The upgraded outlook rests on a market that remains tight. CEO Emma Delaney expects low fuel inventories to keep propping up strained refining markets, giving the margin picture continued support. Shares shed 0.7% on Friday to close at 71.60 euros.
A Quarter of Two Halves
Results for the third quarter of 2026, published roughly two weeks ago, laid bare the diverging fortunes of OMV's businesses. Clean CCS operating profit before special items climbed 68% to 2.12 billion euros, a figure Reuters reported came in broadly in line with market expectations.
Refining did the heavy lifting, with the margin rising to 37.50 US dollars per barrel. Chemicals told a different story: operating profit in that division fell to 63 million euros, a result that disappointed. Clean CCS earnings per share for the quarter reached 3.54 euros.

Guidance Points to a Strong Year
The raised refining forecast sits within a broader 2026 outlook. OMV lifted its projection for the European refining indicator margin to around 25 US dollars per barrel, and it also assumes a Brent price above 95 US dollars per barrel alongside organic investments of roughly 3.5 billion euros. All of these are full-year expectations rather than results already booked.
Morgan Stanley Cuts, Then Lifts Its Target
Morgan Stanley moved OMV to "Underweight" from "Equal-weight" on Friday, according to media reports, while simultaneously raising its price target to 67.00 euros from 65.50 euros. The two adjustments pulled in opposite directions, and the new target still sits below the closing price of 71.60 euros. The downgrade coincided with Friday's share decline, though it has not been established as the sole cause.
Vienna Recycling Project Awaits a Decision
Away from the quarterly numbers, the investment decision on a planned recycling project in Vienna remains outstanding. OMV said no final go-ahead has been given for "Projekt Schleie," a downstream initiative reported on Wednesday. The facility would handle mechanical and chemical recycling of non-hazardous plastic waste, with environmental impact assessment documents citing a planned processing capacity of up to 200,000 tonnes per year.

Neptun Deep Nears the Finish Line
The Black Sea gas development offers another pillar of the growth case. Delaney said Neptun Deep is 89% complete, and at full production OMV expects it to contribute around half a billion euros a year to adjusted CCS operating profit.
Investors get their next confirmed look at the company on 4 February 2027, when fourth-quarter 2026 results are due. Until then, the third-quarter figures remain the latest reported numbers, while the refining margin, Brent price and organic investment figures all describe the 2026 outlook.
