OMV has pinned its first gas production from Romania's Neptun Deep to the first half of 2027, a milestone that sits well beyond the earnings boost the company is already banking from its refineries. At full plateau output, the Black Sea project is expected to contribute roughly EUR 500 million a year to adjusted CCS operating profit, Reuters reported on 29 October. That figure applies to plateau production, not to the start-up date itself — a distinction OMV ties explicitly to the production level.

The refining side is doing the heavy lifting in the meantime. Adjusted CCS operating profit reached EUR 2.12 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 68% year on year, a jump the company attributed partly to a favourable market environment in its Energy division. Significantly higher refining margins and high utilisation drove the fuel business's contribution, while the European refinery indicator margin tripled to $37.50 per barrel. Adjusted earnings per share came in at EUR 3.54. Chemicals was the outlier, with its result falling to EUR 63 million.

CEO Emma Delaney described the quarter in an APA interview as a "strong result in a supportive market environment," with the agency also citing higher oil and gas prices as a driver. She flagged a further tailwind on the same day she spoke: low fuel inventories, which she expects to keep global refining markets tight.

Analysts Split on the Stock

Morgan Stanley moved the other way. The bank cut OMV from "Equal Weight" to "Underweight," with analyst Guilherme Levy setting a price target of EUR 67, according to media reports. The shares slipped 0.7% on Friday to close at EUR 71.60 — still above the target, leaving the stock trading at a premium to the bank's valuation.

On the project front, CFO Reinhard Florey said on Thursday that Neptun Deep is scheduled to come on stream next year, a statement that concerns the intended start of operations. Shareholder registers also shifted: BlackRock reported about a week earlier that its aggregate position in OMV voting rights and financial instruments had crossed the 5% threshold again, split between 4.53% in share voting rights and 0.47% in financial instruments.

Two other developments rounded out the week. OMV Petrom appointed Delaney to its supervisory board until 28 April 2029. And in the Amsterdam region, OMV was selected alongside Cocreators as operator to develop geothermal heating projects and potentially implement them, following a European tender — the selection covers development, with execution described as a possibility rather than a commitment.
