Plug Power Taps Ballard Veteran to Fix Stack Manufacturing as Cash Burn Persists

Plug Power hired a former Ballard COO to industrialize PEM-stack production, as Q3 revenue grew over 10% but cash burn and a BMO sell rating persist.

Plug Power has handed the industrialization of its PEM-stack production to a former Ballard Power Systems chief operating officer, a hire that puts manufacturing execution squarely alongside revenue growth on the list of things investors need to watch.

Dr. Lee Sweetland joins as Global Engineering Industrialization Lead, with a mandate covering output, product reliability and cost competitiveness in stack manufacturing. The appointment, announced Monday, signals where management sees the next bottleneck. It is not, on its own, evidence that the bottleneck has been cleared — a personnel decision sets a priority, and its economic payoff has yet to be demonstrated.

Growth Confirmed, Quality Unproven

The operational backdrop is a preliminary, unaudited revenue picture for the third quarter of 2026: growth of more than 10% year over year, disclosed on October 15, alongside further margin improvements. Management also reaffirmed its full-year 2026 guidance of roughly 15%–16% revenue growth.

Those figures answer the top-line question. They do not answer the harder one about the quality of that growth. A confirmed sales outlook is not the same thing as a confirmed financial turnaround, and the distinction matters most on the cash side of the ledger.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Net cash consumption in the third quarter came to approximately $28 million. Plug Power ended the period with cash and cash equivalents of around $134 million. One detail cuts in the company's favor: it raised no money during the quarter, neither through its at-the-market program nor via other equity or debt. That frames the burn in a better light, though it offers no guarantee that future capital needs won't arise.

BMO Stays Bearish

Skepticism on the sell side has not softened. On Wednesday, BMO Capital analyst Ameet Thakkar reportedly kept his sell rating and trimmed his price target to $1.00 from $1.30. The cut is a negative verdict on valuation, not a forecast of how the business will actually perform — worth keeping in mind as a judgment call rather than a data point.

What would move the needle is evidence that operational gains are translating into financial ones. Reliability and cost competitiveness are the yardsticks management has now publicly set for itself, and they carry as much weight as the revenue line.

Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

November 9 as the Next Checkpoint

The company has scheduled third-quarter results for November 9, 2026, the next official opportunity to test the preliminary numbers. Revenue will draw the headlines; margins and the trajectory of the cash balance will tell the more important story.

Until then, the picture is one of promised growth and a named executive tasked with fixing manufacturing economics. Revenue expansion is a necessary ingredient of a better outcome for Plug Power — not proof that one has arrived.
