Renk Rides Italian Armour Wave as Analysts Split on How Far the Rally Can Run

Italy's tank procurement filing lifts Renk's order prospects; mwb research and Berenberg raise targets, Goldman upgraded to Buy.

Italy has formally kicked off the procurement of a new generation of main battle tanks, with the requisite notification landing at the country's anti-corruption authority ANAC on Monday. For Renk Group, the Augsburg-based gearbox specialist, the paperwork in Rome translates directly into order-flow: as an entrenched supplier to heavy military vehicle programmes, the company stands to capture a slice of Europe's widening defence spending pie.

That demand tailwind lands on top of an already hefty backlog, which stood at EUR 7.4 billion at the halfway mark of the year. The news also offered a measure of relief to a stock that has spent months under pressure. Renk shares finished Friday at EUR 40.79, hovering just above a 52-week low of EUR 39.28.

mwb research Lifts Target, Berenberg Goes Higher Still

Sell-side analysts were quick to mark the Italian signal. On Monday, mwb research raised its price target on Renk from EUR 48 to EUR 53 while reiterating a buy rating, pointing squarely at Rome's land-forces procurement plans as the central catalyst. The same house flagged the high-margin after-sales business as a growing focus, noting management's ambition of reaching EUR 1 billion in annual service revenue by 2030 — though mwb's own modelling stays more conservative than the board's, which has floated EUR 2 billion in after-sales turnover by 2035.

Berenberg is more bullish on valuation. Analyst Chris Armstrong keeps a Buy rating with a EUR 72 target, placing Renk alongside Rheinmetall and OHB among his top picks in the aerospace, space and defence space. Armstrong's case rests on an anticipated economic upswing in Germany, which he expects to be driven largely by fiscal stimulus and a recovery in exports.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

Goldman Sachs, for its part, upgraded the stock from Neutral to Buy roughly a week ago with a EUR 65 target, adding to the sense that conviction is rebuilding across the Street.

Marine Deal Adds a Second Growth Leg

Renk is not relying on land systems alone. On 3 July the company signed a binding agreement to acquire David Brown Defence, a move that, via the purchase from Stellex Capital Management, secures access to the Global Combat Ship naval programme and its up to 34 vessels. The transaction — expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026 — brings with it an order backlog exceeding GBP 700 million through 2030.

Guidance Intact, With a Strategy Day on the Horizon

Operationally, the foundation for the current financial year looks steady. Management continues to guide for revenue above EUR 1.5 billion in 2026, with adjusted EBIT projected in a range of EUR 255 million to EUR 285 million — and the board steering toward the upper half of that corridor.

Longer-term growth in the margin-rich service segment will take centre stage at a strategy update scheduled for 8 December, when the chief executive is due to lay out the aftermarket roadmap in detail. Before that, market participants will train their sights on 5 November, when Renk reports third-quarter figures.

UBS Trims Its Stake

Away from the analyst commentary, the shareholder register has shifted. A voting-rights notification shows UBS Group has reduced its position, with the direct voting share now standing at just 0.51 percent — the bulk of the exposure being held through derivative instruments. The disclosure is calculated against the company's total of 100 million voting rights.

The stock traded at EUR 40.41 on Friday, essentially flat with a gain of 0.04 percent, though it remains down roughly 25 percent since the turn of the year.
