Goldman Sachs has thrown its weight behind Renk Group, upgrading the German defence gearbox maker to a buy rating with a €65 price target. The endorsement, delivered by analyst Sam Burgess on Friday, lifted the shares 5.5% to €42.39 — a welcome reprieve for a stock that had spent weeks searching for direction.

Burgess framed the call as an entry opportunity following the recent pullback, pointing to the company's long-term growth prospects. The upgrade lands at a moment when the broader defence sector has been working through valuation adjustments after months of weakness, yet Renk's industrial demand shows few signs of cooling.

Order Intake Running Hot

The Augsburg-based specialist in heavy transmissions and drive systems booked €1.2 billion in new orders during the first half — a 29.7% jump year on year. That pushed the total backlog to a record €7.4 billion, underpinned largely by major programmes from European and international armed forces.

Those filled order books give the company dependable utilisation for years to come. Vehicle Mobility Solutions is doing much of the heavy lifting, as militaries across numerous partner nations modernise existing fleets and place substantial new orders.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

On the contract front, a framework agreement with Rheinmetall covering the KF41 Lynx infantry fighting vehicle — encompassing transmissions and final drives worth roughly €270 million — adds ballast to the outlook. Renk America is generating its own momentum: a follow-on U.S. Army order for HMPT-800 transmissions carries a potential total volume of up to $691 million. Meanwhile, the acquisition of Britain's David Brown Defence, reported by Handelsblatt, is set to broaden the company's maritime footprint.

Ownership Shifts Underway

Behind the trading action, the shareholder register has been moving. UBS Group disclosed on Wednesday that it had crossed a reporting threshold, holding a total voting rights share of 5.08%. The position breaks down into 1.10% from shares and 3.98% held through financial instruments — a structure that points to a derivatives-based build. Other large investors have likewise been adjusting their exposures, underscoring the ongoing reshuffling among Renk's owners.

The repositioning comes against a mixed run of corporate news. Roughly three weeks ago, reports on the ramp-up of tank transmission production sparked debate, and the stock has since shed 10.3%. Half-year results and a confirmed guidance the previous Wednesday offered some relief, sending the shares up 3.8%. Further back, two opposing events set the tone: the David Brown Defence takeover, after which the price has slipped 5.1%, and Fidelity's exit, accompanied by a 16.3% decline. Away from its core business, Renk also features in sports sponsorship as a top partner of the Augsburg Panthers.

Guidance Holds, Execution in Focus

Management remains confident on the full year, targeting group revenue above €1.5 billion and adjusted EBIT of between €255 million and €285 million. For investors, the central question is how efficiently the Augsburg team can convert its existing orders into high-margin revenue. The next hard data point arrives on 5 November 2026, when third-quarter figures are due.

What the combination of fresh voting-rights disclosures and Goldman's buy call has delivered is a tentative stabilisation. Whether the stock can hold its ground after the latest advance — and build on the recovery — is now the test facing market participants.
