Renk's KNDS Gearbox Win Stretches to 2032, but Analysts Are Still Fixing Their Sights on the Near Term

Renk widened a EUR 130M KNDS gearbox deal through 2032, but JPMorgan and Barclays cut targets as German vehicle ramp-up slows.

Renk has widened a gearbox supply arrangement with KNDS Deutschland worth roughly EUR 130 million, an agreement disclosed on 14 October that won't begin generating deliveries until 2029 and is scheduled to run through 2032. The order covers HSWL-354 transmissions, transmission control units and gear selector switches for the LEOPARD 2 and its wider vehicle family. It is a genuine vote of confidence in Renk's long-run defence pipeline — and, on its own, no answer to the questions now circling the company's near-term growth.

That gap between signed contracts and actual output sits at the heart of the recent sell-side pushback. JPMorgan trimmed its price target to EUR 50 from EUR 62 on Wednesday while keeping its positive rating, with analyst David Perry pointing to a slower ramp-up in German armoured-vehicle programmes and softer prospects for Renk's industrial businesses, according to dpa-AFX. Barclays cut its own target to EUR 57 from EUR 60 a day earlier, likewise holding its constructive stance. Neither house abandoned its upbeat view; both simply marked their numbers down.

The distinction matters. A contract stretching into the next decade cannot offset friction in the current one, and the KNDS win does not contradict the analysts' caution so much as run on a separate track from it.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

A Smaller Group, a Different Yardstick

Adding a layer of complexity is the agreed sale of Renk's plain bearings division to Miba, announced a day before the analyst moves. Renk intends to report the unit as a discontinued operation from the fourth quarter, with the transaction still subject to regulatory approval. The purchase price sits in the low-to-mid three-digit million euro range, and for Miba it ranks as the largest acquisition in its corporate history. The package carries five manufacturing sites worldwide and 500 employees — a self-contained industrial business rather than a bundle of isolated assets.

Because the bearings unit previously contributed about 9% of group revenue, the adjusted full-year guidance now covers continuing operations only: revenue of around EUR 1.4 billion and adjusted EBIT of EUR 240 million to EUR 255 million. The old targets, for comparison, had been revenue above EUR 1.5 billion with adjusted EBIT at the upper end of a EUR 255 million to EUR 285 million range. According to dpa-AFX, the market read a slight operational trim into the revision — meaning investors need to separate two effects, the reshaped group perimeter and the trajectory of what remains.

Order Intake and Margins Point the Other Way

Against that smaller base, Platow reported yesterday that Renk expects stronger order intake than previously forecast and is continuing to improve its margins. That is an expectation rather than a book of confirmed orders, but it adds a meaningful operational counterweight: the defence business gains relative weight inside the group once bearings depart, and a lower absolute profit figure after a disposal says little by itself about the earnings quality of the surviving company.

Two dimensions therefore sit side by side for anyone valuing Renk. One is the reduced size of the group; the other is how orders and profitability develop in the continuing business. The brighter intake outlook and steady margin gains argue against judging the defence focus purely on the lowered absolute annual targets — though they do not substitute for the still-pending work of converting those expectations into reported results. The KNDS agreement underpins the longer horizon; the pace of execution remains a separate test.
