Renk's Pipeline Problem: A 1,400 kW Gearbox, a Saab Order, and the Gap Between Them
Published on 11/01/2026 at 05:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deRenk has spent the past week announcing things it may one day sell and things it has already sold. Investors who read the two categories as one signal are missing the distinction that now sits at the heart of the equity story.
The clearest illustration arrived Friday, when the Augsburg-based propulsion specialist confirmed it is pressing ahead with development of its HSWL 406 transmission and named Italy's NMBT programme as a possible destination for the hardware. The unit is designed to handle up to 1,400 kW. What the statement did not contain was an order.
That omission matters because NMBT — run through the Leonardo Rheinmetall Military Vehicles joint venture — is a live procurement, not a wish list. Italy has approved the first financing tranche for as many as 290 vehicles built on the KF-51 Panther platform, according to company information. For Renk, that represents addressable volume. It is not confirmed order intake, and the company's own release draws the line explicitly.
Contrast that with the news Renk put out a day earlier. Its Renk Magnet-Motor subsidiary booked a significant contract from Saab covering three Stirling power generation systems destined for a submarine programme belonging to a NATO member state. Management flagged it as the third major order within that particular collaboration — hard business, signed and reported, rather than a technical opening.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?
The two announcements sit at opposite ends of the commitment spectrum, and the market has been slow to separate them.
Sell-Side Trims Targets While Keeping the Faith
Analysts, at least, are looking past the headlines to the delivery calendar. JPMorgan cut its price target on Renk to EUR 50 from EUR 62 on 21 October, holding its "Overweight" rating intact. David H. Perry pointed to a somewhat slower ramp-up of German armoured vehicle programmes and gloomier prospects for the industrial businesses, according to dpa-AFX, and trimmed his earnings-per-share forecasts across 2027 through 2030 as a result.
A day later, Barclays took a different route to a similar destination. Afonso Osorio lowered his target to EUR 57 while reaffirming "Overweight," signalling that moderately reduced estimates do not undermine his constructive view. His focus was the strategic logic of separating the plain-bearing business — a portfolio move he reads as a positive.
That divestment, agreed roughly two weeks ago, hands the slide-bearing unit to Miba. The purchase price remains confidential and completion hinges on customary regulatory approvals. Neither the sale nor the analyst endorsement is a done deal, and neither leaves earnings expectations untouched.
The Financial Frame Has Moved
Renk's updated guidance for fiscal 2026 applies to continuing operations only — a distinction that now carries real weight. Management is targeting revenue of around EUR 1.4 billion and adjusted EBIT of EUR 240–255 million on that narrowed basis.
Against that backdrop, the gearbox development story offers no read-through on trading. The company will publish its nine-month report and host a conference call on 5 November 2026, the first hard checkpoint for judging how the reframed group is performing.
Renk Group at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
There is one more concrete data point in the order column. The expanded agreement with KNDS Deutschland, struck about two weeks ago, covers transmissions, control units and gear selectors for the LEOPARD 2 and its vehicle family. At roughly EUR 130 million, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2032, it demonstrates precisely how far order intake can run ahead of revenue recognition.
Renk also confirmed it will exhibit at Euronaval in Paris from 3 to 6 November 2026, a marketing appearance that complements the naval order flow without adding to it.
The takeaway for shareholders is a discipline of categories. A development milestone creates an opportunity; a signed contract creates a basis. Between the two lies a delivery schedule that determines when either reaches the income statement — and that schedule, not the announcement flow, is what the sell-side is now pricing.
