Rheinmetall's week has been a study in contrasts: fresh contract wins and technological milestones on one side, a stark warning from the top about Europe's defensive readiness on the other. Shares of the Düsseldorf-based defense contractor were changing hands at 995.80 euros on Tuesday, down 1.6 percent from Monday's close of 1,012.00 euros, with pre-market indications earlier pointing to 997.50 euros. The stock remains far below its 52-week high of 2,007.00 euros, and the company carries a market capitalization of 47.22 billion euros.

Funding Boost for Specialty Component Manufacturing

A Rheinmetall subsidiary has secured public funding to develop advanced production methods for high-performance NanoLam™ capacitors. The grant is intended to help establish scalable, industrial-scale manufacturing processes, deepening the group's technological reach into a highly specialized components niche.

Robotics Takes Center Stage in NATO Maritime Exercise

The company's push into unmanned systems was on full display as it announced participation in the NATO drill REPMUS26, testing networked unmanned platforms designed to protect harbors and critical maritime infrastructure. The exercise fits squarely into Rheinmetall's broader strategic bet on autonomy.

That bet was underscored by CEO Armin Papperger, who, according to media reports, described European missile inventories as "alarmingly low" and pointed to the growing role robotics will play for modern armed forces. His assessment, delivered on September 17, came even as the group's order books swell.

Capacity Expansion Across the Atlantic

Rheinmetall Canada kicked off an expansion of its Québec plant on September 16, adding 7,060 square meters of floor space. The new area is earmarked for ramping up land-based autonomy capabilities. On the unmanned ground vehicle front, American Rheinmetall notched a sales win with the U.S. Marine Corps for 12 Mission Master SP autonomous ground vehicles, a contract valued at 7 million US dollars.

Artillery and Vehicle Orders Keep Rolling In

Demand in the conventional munitions segment shows no sign of cooling. On September 14, an international customer placed a major order for several tens of thousands of 155-mm artillery shells, a deal worth a low triple-digit million-euro amount, with delivery slated for 2027. The same day brought news that the keel for a third fleet service boat had been laid in Wolgast, while Defense Minister Boris Pistorius held out the prospect of a fourth vessel of the same class.

Mid-September also saw Rheinmetall and Mercedes-Benz UK unveil new tactical vehicles under the Team Wolf banner at the DVD 2026 trade fair, introducing the Timber Wolf and Silver Wolf. Separately, the group completed a Factory Acceptance Test for a new training device that will support live-fire and combat training for the schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie, a heavy infantry weapons carrier.
