Two brokerage houses cut their ratings on Rheinmetall on Thursday, a day after the German defence contractor trimmed its full-year outlook, and the stock slipped 2.1% as investors digested the double blow.

Bernstein Research moved Rheinmetall to "Market-Perform" from "Outperform" and lowered its price target to EUR 1,000 from EUR 1,200, according to dpa-AFX. Oddo BHF followed with a downgrade of its own, stepping down to "Neutral" from "Outperform" and cutting its target to EUR 1,200 from EUR 1,670, media reports said.

Guidance Cut Traced to Arminius and Artillery Rounds

The downgrades stem from Rheinmetall's reduced annual expectations, unveiled on Wednesday. The company now projects 2026 revenue of around EUR 13.2 billion, down from its earlier range of EUR 13.7–14.2 billion. Management pointed to delays in awarding the Boxer project Arminius and postponed lot call-offs for artillery ammunition. Profitability expectations were trimmed as well, with the operating margin forecast slipping to roughly 18.5% from about 19%.

Quarterly Figures Show the Other Side of the Ledger

The numbers published a day earlier also make clear that the underlying business is expanding briskly. Operating profit for the third quarter jumped 62% to EUR 553 million, with an operating margin of 17.5%. Over the first nine months of 2026, revenue reached EUR 8.376 billion, up 38% year on year, while operating profit climbed 68% to EUR 1.339 million and the operating margin came in at 16.0%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Order Book of EUR 78 Billion Sets the Stakes

Against those results sits an order backlog of EUR 78.012 billion — a deep pipeline that argues for future business but puts the spotlight squarely on how reliably it can be converted into revenue and earnings. For the bull case to hold, Rheinmetall must demonstrate that deferred awards and call-offs eventually land in the top line rather than forcing further revisions to expectations. The company's own guidance already implies a full-year margin above the level achieved in the third quarter, meaning profitability will have to improve from here for the plan to be met.

Beyond Timing: Destinus Adds a Second Worry

The negative case extends past a simple shift between reporting periods. Rheinmetall also flagged likely lower revenue from new business activities, including its cooperation with Destinus. Investors will need to judge whether those hoped-for contributions arrive later or stay permanently below expectations. Additional delays, or weaker-than-expected returns from new ventures, could keep pressure on the planning.

November Capital Markets Day Is the Next Test

Management's case rests on the deferred items being executed in due course. A future Arminius award and the completion of postponed ammunition call-offs could support revenue, though timing and economic delivery remain the key conditions. The capital markets day scheduled for 27 November 2026 offers the next concrete occasion for reassessment, with investors expected to press for detail on the timetable for working through the backlog, the outlook for new business activities and the path of earnings power.
