Rheinmetall's Build-Out Meets a More Cautious Price Tag

UBS lowered its Rheinmetall target to EUR 1,360 from EUR 1,600, keeping a buy rating, as the group expands plants in Lithuania, the UK, Spain and Romania.

Rheinmetall is assembling a European defence-industrial footprint at a pace that few peers can match — a Lithuanian shell plant through environmental review, a British gun hall back in production, a Spanish ammunition line already running, and a Romanian shipyard newly in hand. The market's response, at least from one major house, has been to nudge the valuation dial down rather than up.

UBS cut its price target on the Düsseldorf-based group on Tuesday to EUR 1,360 from EUR 1,600, keeping its buy rating intact. Analyst Sven Weier expects Rheinmetall to set more conservative objectives at its capital markets day, scheduled for 26 and 27 November, in a bid to avoid a fresh round of disappointments. The move leaves a positive recommendation sitting alongside a more guarded view of how much upside remains.

Lithuania: a permit, not a profit

The most concrete regulatory news concerns the planned munitions plant in the Radviliškis district near Baisogala. Lithuania's environmental protection agency has concluded that the project should not cause significant negative environmental effects, provided the proposed safeguards and conditions are implemented. The assessment was based on the environmental impact report submitted by Rheinmetall Defence Lietuva and is explicitly tied to binding requirements — it does not amount to an unconditional green light for every stage of the project.

Direct investment in the site is put at around EUR 300 million, with annual output planned at up to 75,000 artillery shells of 155-millimetre calibre. Construction costs are stated at EUR 141 million including VAT, with PST Group lined up as the builder and roughly 150 people expected to work there. The venture is being run through Rheinmetall Defence Lietuva, a German-Lithuanian joint company whose formation Rheinmetall and EPSO-G have confirmed.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

For shareholders, the decision removes one specific uncertainty. It says nothing about the later production ramp-up or the economics that will flow from it. New plants, materials and production start-ups absorb capital first; extra capacity and a growing order book do not automatically translate into a correspondingly higher free cash flow. Alongside the build-out, the financing behind it matters just as much.

Three more industrial pieces fall into place

Rheinmetall says its "UK Gun Hall" in Telford has brought independent large-calibre weapons manufacturing back to Britain, part of an investment programme worth more than GBP 200 million in the United Kingdom. Breech production began in May 2026 and barrel manufacturing in June 2026, with full utilisation targeted at up to 245 barrels and more than 50 breeches a year.

Just over a week earlier, the company commissioned a new medium-calibre line in Albacete, Spain, representing an investment of roughly EUR 20 million at the site. Stated annual capacity there is about 1.2 million projectiles and some 1.8 million cartridge cases.

Add to that the auction win for Romania's Mangalia shipyard, acquired jointly with MSC for a combined purchase price of around EUR 138 million. The two partners intend to develop the site for both civilian and military shipbuilding, and the yard is to take part in building four naval vessels for the Romanian government.

Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The Bundeswehr's stopgap

Delays to Rheinmetall's Skyranger system have prompted the German armed forces to plan an interim solution for drone defence, according to a Handelsblatt report on Thursday. The newspaper said 48 GARMR drone-defence systems from Diehl are to be procured — a reminder that programme timing, not just factory capacity, shapes the revenue picture.

What 5 November will show

Third-quarter 2026 results are due on 5 November, the next scheduled checkpoint at which investors can measure operating progress against the wider growth plan. The Lithuanian environmental ruling strengthens the industrial case; whether Rheinmetall can convert capacity into profitable output and free cash flow is the question the quarterly report will begin to answer. A necessary project step, in other words, but not yet proof of economic success.
