Rheinmetall's Order Streak Runs Into a Defense Sector Losing Its Appetite

Fresh contract wins across naval maintenance, intelligence-gathering vessels and land systems have done little to shift the mood around Rheinmetall, where a late-week retreat left the stock nursing a 36% loss since the start of the year.
Shares in the Düsseldorf-based group closed Friday at EUR 986.60 on Xetra, down 0.9% on the day, after profit-taking that began Thursday carried through to the end of the trading week. The print leaves the equity 9.3% above its 52-week low. Traders across Europe's defense complex turned jittery on reports of diplomatic overtures and speculation about negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, with investors who had ridden a long stretch of gains opting to lock in profits at the first hint of a possible path to talks.
Analysts Split Between Patience and Optimism
The changed tone has left research desks cautious. MWB Research reaffirmed its "Hold" rating on Thursday, while Bernstein Research had already restated an "Outperform" call with a EUR 1,900 price target on September 21, without issuing a fresh rating. The divergence points to a market shifting away from pure demand euphoria toward a more discriminating read on long-term prospects: European defense budgets remain elevated for the foreseeable future, yet near-term geopolitical hopes are sapping risk appetite.
A Week of Contract Announcements
None of that has slowed the company's commercial engine. On Tuesday, the Pierburg Pump Technology division secured roughly EUR 1.5 million in public research funding for NanoLink, a project developing production processes for NanoLam capacitors, with total planned investment at the site exceeding EUR 4.4 million. The work deepens Rheinmetall's manufacturing capabilities in specialized electronics well beyond its traditional heavy-equipment base.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?
Midweek brought a multi-year framework agreement with Germany's General Customs Directorate. Rheinmetall Naval Systems, operating through the NVL shipyard group, will handle technical support, maintenance and repair for four new customs vessels powered by liquefied natural gas, alongside emergency services and technical assistance.
The naval pipeline extends further. On September 21, during NATO's REPMUS26 exercise in Portugal, the group put networked unmanned systems through their paces — a deployable operations center housed in containers that feeds naval forces a multi-dimensional picture of underwater and surface zones, aimed at protecting port facilities and critical infrastructure. Reuters reported that Germany's defense minister, speaking September 14 at the keel-laying of a Rheinmetall-built vessel in Wolgast, announced an order for a fourth signals-intelligence ship, with deliveries of the class slated to begin in 2029.
Land systems have not been idle either. At the DVD 2026 exhibition in Millbrook, Rheinmetall UK and Mercedes-Benz UK jointly unveiled light tactical vehicles named Timber Wolf and Silver Wolf. The company had also recently closed a deal with the US Marine Corps for twelve autonomous Mission Master SP vehicles.
Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Execution Over Enthusiasm
For now, macroeconomic and geopolitical concerns hold sway over the wider defense sector, and Rheinmetall's steady flow of orders has yet to dislodge that grip.
