The German defense sector is enjoying a broad rally, and Rheinmetall is riding the wave. The Düsseldorf-based arms maker climbed roughly 2.4% to €1,171.20 in Wednesday trading, with one market snapshot showing the stock as high as €1,183.60 — a 3.5% advance from Tuesday's close. The gains put Rheinmetall among the strongest performers in the DAX, which itself rose 0.5% to around 26,520 points, led by Siemens Energy, Infineon, and the defense contractor.

The catalyst for the sector-wide move didn't come from Rheinmetall itself. Instead, it was Thyssenkrupp's naval subsidiary TKMS that set the tone. The warship builder lifted its guidance for fiscal 2025/26, now projecting revenue growth of 10% to 12% instead of the previous 2% to 5% range. Adjusted EBIT margin is expected to reach as high as 6.5%, up from an earlier forecast of more than 6%. TKMS shares jumped as much as 15.7% on the news, briefly crossing the €100 threshold.

The upgraded outlook rests on a record order book of more than €20 billion. In the current nine-month period, TKMS revenue rose 19% to €1.9 billion, while adjusted EBIT climbed 13% to €110 million. Among its largest contracts are four frigates for the German Navy and its status as preferred bidder for twelve submarines in Canada — a program valued at over €15 billion.

Investors read the TKMS numbers as confirmation that European defense demand remains robust, and the read-across lifted other sector names alongside Rheinmetall. Renk advanced 3.54% and Hensoldt gained 1.91%. Adding to the constructive tone, RBC initiated coverage of defense contractor CSG with a "Sector Perform" rating, citing what it called a "strong" environment for ammunition.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

For Rheinmetall, however, the technical picture is doing much of the heavy lifting. The stock is approaching a resistance zone between €1,177 and €1,233.40 that chart-watchers have been tracking for days. A decisive breakout above €1,233.40 would open the door to a more sustained recovery, according to technical analysts. Fail that, and a drop back below €1,122 could trigger a slide toward €1,000, with further support at €946.60.

The recent price action underscores how skittish the market has become. Just last week, the stock lost more than 2% over seven trading sessions before the current rebound took hold. At current levels, Rheinmetall trades about 8% above its 50-day moving average of €1,097.20 — a sign of short-term upward momentum. But the distance to the 200-day average, and especially to the 52-week high of €2,007.00 set in early October, suggests lingering caution since the autumn peak. The stock remains roughly 42% below that high.

That skepticism has a concrete foundation. Rheinmetall's half-year report brought a cut to full-year guidance: the company now expects revenue of at least €13.7 billion, down from a prior range of €14 billion to €14.5 billion. Management attributed the revision to the removal of the F126 frigate program from its planning — a contract that had been expected to contribute meaningfully to future revenue.

The picture for investors is decidedly mixed. On one hand, the company's second-quarter operational performance comfortably beat internal expectations. On the other, the visible reduction in growth targets has left chart-oriented traders weighing the signals differently. For now, the broader European defense narrative is winning out, but the coming sessions will determine whether the current momentum can push Rheinmetall through the €1,233.40 ceiling — or send it back toward the lower support levels. No company-specific news or order announcements accompanied Wednesday's move; the rally is purely a function of sector sentiment and the TKMS-driven enthusiasm rippling through the industry.
