SanDisk's Record Quarter Meets a Wall of Skepticism

SanDisk delivered first-quarter fiscal 2027 results that beat expectations on both lines, yet the stock fell 12% in yesterday's session. The two facts sit together without contradiction: the market's quarrel is not with what the company just reported, but with how long that kind of growth can last.

Revenue for the quarter came in at $11.03 billion, up 378% year over year, while adjusted earnings per share reached $49.51. Those figures arrived into a broad technology selloff, with Reuters reporting mounting nervousness over the capital spending plans of the large AI infrastructure players. Analyst price-target cuts across several houses fit that mood of skepticism — but they do not amount to a verdict against SanDisk's operating performance.

Price targets retreat, ratings hold

Goldman Sachs and BofA Securities both trimmed their targets to $2,000 yesterday, down from $2,200 and $2,500 respectively. Neither firm abandoned its buy recommendation. That combination is the telling detail: the analysts are pulling back their valuation yardsticks without withdrawing their fundamentally positive view. BofA attributed the move to valuation concerns in a late-cycle phase — not a claim that a business downturn has already arrived, but a warning against extrapolating strong results indefinitely.

Additional pressure came from the wider industry. Media reports said Kioxia flagged a marked slowdown in NAND selling-price growth and an operating profit outlook below analyst expectations. That news explicitly did not come from SanDisk. It does, however, explain why investors might scrutinize SanDisk's valuation more critically. Treating Kioxia's comments as a direct SanDisk profit warning goes beyond the documented facts; ignoring the industry backdrop altogether because of strong in-house numbers would be just as convenient.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SANDISK?

The sequential picture deserves the spotlight

The more critical test lies in the comparison between consecutive quarters. Revenue growth decelerated from 51% to 23%. At the same time, consumer-segment revenue fell 29% versus the prior quarter.

That is the key caveat against an unreservedly bullish reading. SanDisk is still growing briskly, but not evenly across all areas. Anyone focused solely on the enormous year-over-year increase misses those differences. After a growth spurt of this magnitude, current momentum deserves more attention than the historical comparison.

The data center business offers the strongest counterargument: its revenue climbed 61% sequentially to $4.8 billion. The Edge segment generated $5.83 billion. That strength is concretely measurable and should not be lost from view amid the share-price decline. Conversely, it would be too easy to treat this development as proof of permanently unchecked growth. The operational achievement deserves recognition; extending it forward requires discipline.

Guidance cuts against the panic narrative

For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, SanDisk projects revenue of $12.2 billion to $12.6 billion — a further increase over the quarter just reported. Talk of an imminent business collapse is therefore misplaced. The outlook argues against the thesis that the stock's slide can simply be explained by weak business prospects.

On adjusted earnings, SanDisk expects $55 to $57 per share ahead of the split. The adjusted gross margin for the completed quarter stood at 85.1%. High margins are a strong argument for the company, but they do not make the stock independent of expectations. The decisive question is whether SanDisk actually delivers the earnings power it has promised — and then defends it. A forecast remains a forecast, even after a convincing quarter.

Not every analyst house is reading the situation the same way. Rosenblatt reaffirmed its buy rating with a $2,400 target, even as Goldman cut. That divergence is more informative than any single target: it shows confidence in the business alongside a need to adjust valuation assumptions. A strong operation does not justify every price, and a falling stock does not disprove every positive business case.

SANDISK at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Buybacks are an argument, not a safety net

The quarterly filing submitted yesterday also documents share repurchases totaling $5.0 billion in the quarter through October 2. That is a concrete capital measure, not merely a statement of intent. The remaining authorization, however, is neither a commitment on the timing of further purchases nor a floor under the share price. Treating it as a shield against further valuation markdowns would go too far.

The company has also approved an 8:1 stock split. The record date is November 9, with distribution due after the close on November 19, and split-adjusted trading expected to begin November 20. This capital measure is secondary to the investment case: it answers neither the question of revenue momentum nor that of margin durability. Making it the main argument puts the emphasis in the wrong place.

All told, neither the all-clear nor alarmism convinces. SanDisk has strong reported results, an outlook that points higher still, and a substantial buyback framework. At the same time, analysts are pulling in their targets while the industry environment feeds doubt. The operating strength deserves weight — it does not hand out a free pass on valuation. What the company must prove now is not another record, but the durability of its earnings power.
