SAP Extends German Energy-Market Support to 2030 While Its AI Ambitions Await Proof

SAP offers optional support for German energy-market solutions through 2030, with no new guidance, as cloud revenue grows and AI demands persist.

SAP has handed customers of its existing German energy-market solutions a longer planning runway, pledging on Friday that maintenance and support can continue through 31 December 2030. The commitment is explicitly an option for interested customers rather than an automatic extension across the entire base, and it carries no fresh revenue or earnings guidance.

That distinction matters for how investors read the announcement. The offer sets a firm support horizon for a defined slice of the portfolio; it says nothing about whether the pace of cloud migration will speed up or slow down. What it does signal is continuity for the installed base, though the financial weight of the pledge depends on how many customers actually take it up.

Cloud Momentum Sets the Backdrop

The support pledge lands alongside a cloud business growing at a healthy clip. For the third quarter of 2026, SAP reported cloud revenue of EUR 6.668 billion, with total revenue of EUR 10.270 billion. The current cloud backlog — the contracted pipeline that underpins future cloud revenue — reached EUR 24.1 billion, up 28%.

Management also steered its cloud and software revenue outlook toward the upper end of the previously guided range, while confirming the currency-adjusted non-IFRS operating profit target at EUR 11.8 billion to EUR 12.2 billion. The quarterly figures describe how the business is performing; the support notice merely fixes a timeline for certain legacy applications. Neither reading should be conflated with the other.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

AI Push Meets a Demand for Hard Numbers

Where the growth story gets murkier is artificial intelligence. An analyst note circulated on Thursday warned that without more concrete AI metrics, the stock's upside could stay capped. That caution dovetails with what users are asking for: dependable use cases and integration that doesn't demand disproportionate effort.

The German-speaking SAP user group made economic viability and freedom of choice the yardsticks for innovation and transformation in an October 6 statement, calling for robust AI applications that can be adopted without excessive overhead. Two days later, Handelsblatt reported on demands for clear AI rules and open questions about SAP's "Autonomous Enterprise" strategy. From the customer side, new features must do more than add capabilities — they have to pay their way and slot in without friction.

SAP, for its part, keeps expanding the menu. On October 8 it unveiled extended Joule Assistants and specialized Joule Agents for tasks across the supply chain, with general availability slated for the fourth quarter of 2026 — a product launch on the horizon, not yet a proven commercial result. The company also plans to grow through acquisition: on October 6 it announced the planned purchase of TechWolf, a Belgian provider of an AI-powered work-intelligence platform. That deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to customary conditions including regulatory approvals.

Product rollouts and dealmaking show how SAP intends to press ahead with AI. They don't substitute for the economic evidence customers are demanding.

Two Lanes, One Verdict Pending

For investors, the two strands need to be kept apart. SAP is posting cloud growth and broadening its AI portfolio; whether that translates into convincing incremental earnings can't be inferred from announcements alone. The user group's demands make the next scorecard fairly clear: solid applications, demonstrable economic benefit and integration that works in practice.

The next scheduled update comes on 28 January 2027, when SAP plans to publish preliminary results for the final quarter and for fiscal 2026 as a whole. Until then, the German energy-market commitment offers affected customers a defined support horizon — and offers the market no independent case for additional profit growth.
