SAP Pairs an AI Guardrail Story With a Cloud Beat, but the Payoff Stays Unpriced

SAP plans to add NVIDIA OpenShell to its Business AI Platform as Q3 cloud revenue rises 26%; analysts split on the stock's AI monetization path.

SAP's pitch to corporate buyers is shifting from raw AI capability to the conditions under which that AI is allowed to run. The German software group and NVIDIA plan to fold NVIDIA OpenShell into the SAP Business AI Platform, a move aimed at tightening governance and security around autonomous AI agents. Both companies framed the announcement as a planned expansion of the platform; neither reported that an integration is already complete.

That distinction matters for anyone holding the stock. Export controls and digital sovereignty are shaping how SAP's customers decide which AI models they will deploy, according to the company. A hunger for AI does not mean buyers stop caring where a model comes from or under what terms it operates — those questions sit inside the software purchasing decision itself. The NVIDIA tie-up lands squarely on that ground, and on its own it implies no additional revenue contribution.

The Numbers Behind the Announcement

Wednesday's third-quarter 2026 results supply the commercial backdrop. Cloud revenue climbed 26% to €6.67 billion, the Current Cloud Backlog rose 28% to €24.1 billion, and non-IFRS operating profit came in at €3.03 billion. Cloud ERP Suite revenue grew 29%, while total revenue advanced 13%. SAP also refreshed its 2026 outlook.

Within that guidance, management drew a line between the cloud business and operating profit. For cloud revenue, where the forecast range runs from €25.8 billion to €26.2 billion, SAP expects to land at the top end. The earnings forecast was left untouched.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

Two Verdicts on the Same Quarter

The market's reception was cooler than the headline growth might suggest. According to a dpa-AFX report, the shares turned negative on Thursday despite cloud orders beating expectations, weighed down by a weak broader market and doubts about how far the positive surprises actually reach. JPMorgan pointed on Thursday to headwinds capping those surprises and noted that sell-side analysts still lack concrete figures on how SAP will monetize its own AI offerings. That does not call the cloud growth into question, but it limits what the results can say about future earnings upside.

Goldman Sachs took the other side on Friday, lifting its price target to €258 from €230 and reiterating a buy recommendation. Analyst Mohammed Moawalla credited the continued strength of the Current Cloud Backlog and SAP's competitive position.

What Investors Are Really Being Asked to Weigh

Strip away the broker noise and two separate layers emerge: the business SAP has already reported, and the technical build-out it has merely announced. A rising backlog anchors the optimistic case, yet it does not settle every question about future revenue or the commercial weight of new offerings. The partnership with NVIDIA addresses real governance and security requirements, but whether an economic advantage follows is a different matter from the integration itself — and the latest figures provide the growth frame, not proof that the collaboration pays.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next hard checkpoint is already scheduled. SAP will publish preliminary fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on 28 January 2027. By then the question will be whether the business trajectory still carries the expectations that the strong order growth has put in place.
