SAP used its TechEd stage to sketch out a future in which artificial intelligence doesn't just answer questions inside a single application but coordinates work across an entire software estate. The Walldorf-based group unveiled extensions to Joule Work and Joule Studio alongside an agent-based orchestration layer designed to run multi-step processes spanning different parts of a customer's SAP landscape.

The pitch shifts the focus from standalone AI features to the connective tissue between them. Whether that translates into revenue is a separate matter — the announcements describe an intention, not a completed rollout.

From lone agents to chained workflows

At the heart of the presentation sits the planned link between AI agents and cross-application workflows. The orchestration layer is meant to coordinate multi-stage sequences, and its value will ultimately be judged on whether those agents can reliably execute connected tasks end to end.

A partnership with NVIDIA, announced Thursday, fits the same design. Joule Studio is positioned as the development and governance environment for AI agents, while NVIDIA OpenShell is to support their secure deployment. Development and control are thus addressed as two sides of the same coin — though neither announcement yet carries an attachable revenue or earnings contribution.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

SAP also used the event to introduce new AI models for tabular data. Separately, the company and HPE plan to deploy the SAP-RPT model on the Spaceborne Computer-2 aboard the International Space Station. That project is a proposal rather than an accomplished deployment, and it strikes a different note from the Joule expansion revealed roughly three weeks earlier, which covered Joule Work, Joule Studio and the SAP Business AI Platform.

The numbers behind the narrative

The commercial backdrop comes from results published on 21 October. For the third quarter of 2026, SAP reported revenue of EUR 10.27 billion, up 13%. Cloud revenue climbed 26% to EUR 6.668 billion in the same period, while the current cloud backlog rose 28% to EUR 24.1 billion.

Revenue and adjusted profit beat media-reported expectations, yet the share price reaction was mixed: after opening gains, the stock slipped in the wake of the release. According to media reports, the prospect of slightly slower cloud backlog growth in the final quarter, together with a weaker technology environment, weighed on sentiment.

Management lifted its full-year 2026 guidance for cloud revenue and for combined cloud and software revenue to the upper end of the respective ranges, while confirming the operating profit outlook. That upgraded top-line forecast is the yardstick against which the AI initiatives should be measured; the TechEd news itself does not yet demonstrate any additional acceleration in earnings.

What to watch

Two layers therefore need to be kept apart: the technical capabilities being announced and the business development already on the books. The ISS plan rounds out the product story but does not substitute for proof of economic growth.

The next scheduled date for preliminary figures is 28 January 2027, when SAP will report on the fourth quarter and the full 2026 financial year. Until then, the operational business — not the orbital ambitions — remains the real test.
