SAP used this year's TechEd to widen its artificial intelligence footprint on several fronts at once, unveiling tools for building and managing AI agents while extending the technology into cross-company business processes. The announcements, made on 27 and 28 October, give investors a fresh set of questions to weigh: whether the expanded toolkit can add momentum to a cloud business that is already expanding briskly, or whether it amounts to technical showmanship that has yet to translate into revenue.

The stock gained 3.4% on the day of the main presentation. Reading that move as a direct verdict on the product news would be a stretch — what matters for any forward-looking valuation is whether the new capabilities generate incremental demand.

From building agents to deploying them

At the center of the rollout is Joule Studio, alongside Joule Work and the SAP Business AI Platform. Together they provide the means to develop and govern AI agents, which the company frames under the "Autonomous Enterprise" concept. The scope therefore reaches beyond individual applications to the way those applications are created and controlled — a potential growth avenue, provided customers put the tools to productive use.

A separate strand targets the spaces where trading partners interact. SAP announced agentic AI capabilities for its Business Networks, aimed at smoothing collaboration and operational workflows between companies. This is a distinct building block from the development tooling: one describes where agents are meant to operate, the other how they are made. Neither, on its own, constitutes evidence of commercial success.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

There is also a live deployment to point to. Four migration and modernization assistants are already supporting cloud-ERP transformations at early-adopter customers — a step beyond a pure announcement, though hardly proof of broad adoption.

The cloud trajectory is the yardstick

Underpinning all of it is the cloud franchise, which remains the decisive measure of whether the AI initiatives pay off. In third-quarter 2026 results reported roughly two weeks ago, SAP posted a 26% rise in cloud revenue, while the current cloud backlog reached €24.1 billion, up 26% at constant currencies. Those figures are the baseline against which the new tools should be judged. They are not, however, a validation of products unveiled afterward — investors would do well to separate existing demand from any additional impulse the AI features might create.

The bull case rests on connecting product utility to the cloud offering. Should customers adopt the agent-building and management tools, SAP's portfolio could become more attractive — contingent on the functions delivering enough value in practice. That is an opportunity, not a settled outcome.

Sovereignty as a second lever

An announced cooperation with NTT, disclosed on 28 October, offers another angle. The two companies intend to deliver sovereignty functions built on NTT infrastructure and operations for customers in key markets, covering SAP Sovereign Cloud and SAP Business AI. As a first step, they plan to link SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site with NTT-managed infrastructure and operational services.

Read together, the initiatives could reinforce one another: SAP broadens its AI toolkit while lining up additional channels for sovereign deployment. If the combination works, it could appeal to customers for whom the operating environment matters as much as the features themselves. Execution, rather than the announcement, will be the thing to watch.

Visibility is not the same as revenue

The skeptical case carries real economic weight. A wider feature set does not automatically produce more revenue; customers may use new tools without lifting their overall spending, and adoption could take longer than a product launch implies. In that scenario, the near-term growth contribution stays modest. The NTT tie-up, too, is framed as a planned collaboration — inferring a completed build-out or guaranteed extra sales from it would be premature. The risk sits in implementation and in the demand that follows.

SAP also said it will run its tabular AI model, SAP-RPT, on the HPE Spaceborne Computer-2 aboard the International Space Station. Such a deployment may demonstrate technical capability, but for equity valuation the question is whether economically relevant applications emerge from it. Technical visibility and commercial success are measured on different scales.

What the fourth quarter must show

As long as the cloud business sustains its growth momentum, the new AI tools can be treated as an additional upside option. If the planned NTT cooperation gains practical traction, that would bolster the favorable case, making the investment thesis broader than a wager on individual product launches. Should demand weaken instead, the AI novelties cannot offset that headwind simply by existing — investors would then need to draw a sharper line between technological potential and actual business results. Today's share-price gain does not pre-empt that test.

The next concrete checkpoint is the scheduled release of fourth-quarter 2026 figures on 28 January 2027. The focus should be on whether cloud development continues to support the growth story, with any added commentary on the rollout of the announced offerings helping to sharpen the picture of their economic potential.
