SAP shares came under pressure on Wednesday, caught in a broader selloff sweeping technology and AI stocks. The stock was down 2.8% in midday trading, with the decline attributed to a wider retreat rather than anything specific to the Walldorf-based software maker.

The downdraft has company. Reuters reported a sharp selloff in tech and AI names, pointing to worries about heavier regulation of artificial intelligence and the possibility that AI investment could lose momentum. A separate report on the day's opening bell listed SAP among the stocks dragged lower by the technology rout on Wall Street, citing the same concerns about the pace of AI spending. The selling wave across US and Asian markets also weighed on the DAX. According to media reports, SAP ranked among the losers on Germany's benchmark index by midday, though one account of the session named no concrete company-specific trigger for the move. Software peers traded mixed.

A Product Story That Keeps Building

The market backdrop stands in contrast to a busy stretch on the product side. On 27 October, at SAP TechEd, the company unveiled new AI functions for developers, including tools designed to translate intent into autonomous execution. A day later, SAP and NTT announced a collaboration covering sovereign cloud and SAP Business AI capabilities — a pairing that touches both the cloud offering and the artificial-intelligence toolkit.

Those announcements sit alongside a research study published Wednesday by Precisely and the Americas' SAP Users' Group. The survey examines SAP modernization, AI adoption and the hurdles of migration in a single frame, landing squarely on the intersection between product launches and real-world execution.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

Cloud Revenue Is the Yardstick

For investors, the question is whether the new AI capabilities can underpin cloud growth. SAP has raised its outlook for cloud revenue as well as for combined cloud and software revenue in 2026, and that upgraded guidance is now the benchmark against which the story will be measured.

The bullish case rests on a single link in the chain: technical capability has to generate additional demand, which in turn has to show up in the business. If that connection holds, product innovation and the raised forecast reinforce each other. The developer tools could add an incentive to modernize, provided customers see a practical benefit for their own applications. The NTT tie-up could contribute too, if the joint approach to sovereign cloud and Business AI produces additional usage. What matters is whether the collaboration yields economically relevant progress — its value to the investment case rises with each such milestone.

Where the Thesis Could Slip

The counterargument runs through customer implementation. The Precisely/ASUG study explicitly addresses migration challenges alongside AI adoption, and that raises the question of whether such obstacles could delay the rollout of new functions. Technical progress and economic payoff would then diverge in time.

In the less favorable scenario, modernization projects take longer than investors expect, and the contribution of new AI features to the cloud business arrives later. That becomes especially troublesome if meeting the raised guidance gets harder at the same time — a higher bar paired with rising execution risk. A cautious stance would be warranted if customer adoption lags the product announcements. The combination is what matters: weaker execution would weigh more heavily if cloud growth also lost steam.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The Numbers Due in January 2027

Execution will matter more than the volume of announcements. A credible positive view requires SAP to deliver on its raised outlook while showing visible progress in how customers use the expanded offerings. Cloud growth remains the economic yardstick.

The next concrete checkpoint is the fourth-quarter 2026 results, scheduled for release on 28 January 2027. At that point the investment case will once again have to answer to the business: can the cloud segment carry the elevated expectations, and what economic perspective is SAP opening up for its announced AI extensions?
