SAP's AI Roadmap Wins Applause, but the Invoice Is Still Being Written
Published on 10/28/2026 at 06:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deSAP has spent the past week rolling out a bigger, more open artificial intelligence stack for developers. The harder sell may come later — when customers work out what it costs to run.
At the TechEd conference, the German software group unveiled extensions to Joule Work, Joule Studio and the SAP Business AI Platform. The package includes cross-agent orchestration for AI agents, wider access to third-party data and additional controls. Joule Studio now offers access to more than 70 AI models, and SAP added a foundation model built for tabular data.
The Deutschsprachige SAP-Anwendergruppe (DSAG), which represents German-speaking users, welcomed the emphasis on agent oversight, open interfaces and the ability to pull in data from outside SAP systems. But it attached a caveat that investors would do well to note: many of the functions are slated for 2027, and the cost model has yet to prove itself in day-to-day use.
Two Yardsticks, One Stock
That splits the story into two separate tests. One is whether the technology works. The other is whether it pays.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?
The second question has already been dogging SAP's quarterly narrative. Alongside broad weakness in technology stocks and a cautious backlog outlook, worries about how the company will monetise its AI push weighed on the shares after the results, according to media reports.
The numbers themselves were solid. SAP lifted revenue 13% to EUR 10.3 billion in the third quarter of 2026, with cloud revenue climbing 26% to EUR 6.67 billion. The Current Cloud Backlog — contracted business not yet recognised — reached EUR 24.1 billion, up 28%.
Management nudged its full-year outlook for cloud revenue, and for combined cloud and software revenue, to the top end of the existing range. That is a more optimistic reading inside the current guidance, not a raise above its prior ceiling. And a stronger annual cloud forecast does not automatically mean every growth metric is accelerating: SAP expected a slight slowdown in the currency-adjusted growth of the Current Cloud Backlog in the fourth quarter.
Where the Models Come From
Model provenance has become a live commercial issue, not just a technical one. Chief Financial Officer Dominik Asam told Reuters on 22 October that customers increasingly ask where the models they use are developed, with export controls and Europe's sovereignty debate shaping those decisions.
Usage figures show the installed base is engaged. SAP said on Monday that 45,000 cloud customers are using its AI solutions. That describes adoption of the offering; on its own it does not settle the DSAG's question about whether the cost model holds up.

Goldman Moves First
Goldman Sachs raised its price target on SAP from EUR 230 to EUR 258 on Friday and reiterated its buy rating, dpa-AFX reported. The move came before the TechEd announcements and should not be read as a verdict on the new developer tools.
The next hard checkpoint on the calendar is 28 January 2027, when SAP publishes preliminary results for the fourth quarter and for the full 2026 financial year. Until then, investors are left weighing a widening product portfolio against a cloud business that must keep delivering — and a pricing structure that customers have yet to fully endorse.
