SAP's Orbital AI Pitch Meets a Down-to-Earth Question: Will the Cloud Deliver?

SAP's cloud backlog rose 28% to EUR 24.1B in Q3 2026, but its plan to run an AI model on the ISS remains an intention, not a deployment.

SAP used its TechEd stage to unveil plans for running its SAP-RPT model on the Spaceborne Computer-2 aboard the International Space Station, a joint venture with HPE. The announcement sits alongside new AI models for spreadsheet data, and it lands roughly three weeks after the company rolled out expanded Joule capabilities spanning Joule Work, Joule Studio and the SAP Business AI Platform. What the orbital proposal is not, at least for now, is an operating deployment — it remains a stated intention rather than a completed mission.

That distinction matters for anyone weighing the stock, because a product roadmap is not the same thing as booked business. The economic yardstick remains the company's reported performance, and that picture is more textured than a single headline number suggests.

Cloud Backlog Climbs 28% as Revenue Beats Forecasts

In third-quarter 2026 results published a little over a week ago, SAP's short-term cloud backlog rose 28% to EUR 24.1 billion. Cloud revenue for the reporting period advanced 26% to EUR 6.668 billion, while total revenue reached EUR 10.270 billion. Both the top line and adjusted operating profit came in ahead of expectations, according to media reports.

The market's reaction was anything but uniform. Shares initially gained ground before giving way after the release, with press coverage pointing to guidance for a slightly slower rate of backlog growth in the closing quarter and a softer technology backdrop as the drags.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

On the profitability side, adjusted operating profit for the quarter grew 18%. One caveat: the cloud gross margin encountered mild headwinds, which means growth and profitability have to be read together rather than in isolation. A bigger revenue figure on its own does not settle the question of where earnings go next.

Two Brokers, Two Verdicts

LBBW reinforced its bullish stance following the quarterly report, reaffirming its buy recommendation. The pivotal factor in its outlook is the cloud business, where SAP has signaled it expects to land at the upper end of its full-year guidance range of EUR 25.8 billion to EUR 26.2 billion in cloud revenue. For fiscal 2026, the company likewise anticipates cloud revenue and combined cloud and software revenue at the top of their existing ranges.

DZ Bank occupies the opposite corner. Both houses have raised their price targets — a mark of valuation rather than a record of delivered operating performance — yet they draw conflicting investment conclusions from the same set of numbers. The quarterly results did little to close that gap.

Buyback Rolls On as the Real Test Approaches

Separately, SAP issued a fresh interim disclosure on its ongoing share repurchase program. Over the past week the company acquired 42,848 shares via XETRA for an aggregate EUR 8,793,201.82, excluding incidental acquisition costs. Through Friday, purchases under the current program totaled 9,086,956 shares.

The buyback adds color to the news flow but does not substitute for evidence of further profitable growth. That is precisely where the raised LBBW target faces its reckoning: SAP must now confirm in its annual accounts the cloud momentum management has promised. Preliminary figures for the fourth quarter and full-year 2026 are scheduled for January 28, 2027 — the date on which the orbital AI story and the cloud guidance both meet their audit.
