SAP has picked up a fresh vote of confidence from the Erste Group, which upgraded the stock to "Buy" yesterday — a decision that lands squarely against a nervous mood in enterprise software. The same week brought a concrete product milestone: from November, participants in SAP's "Early Adopter Care" program will get access to an AI Governance Assistant designed to deliver auditable risk classification for AI agents.

The timing matters. Investors have spent much of the past fortnight weighing whether artificial intelligence will bolster SAP's franchise or erode it, and the two developments pull in opposite directions.

A governance tool, not a general release

SAP was careful about scope. The assistant goes first to program participants, not the entire customer base, and the company has made no commitment to broader availability. Its function is narrow by design: helping organizations classify the risk of AI agents in a way that stands up to audit.

That places the tool on the control side of the AI equation rather than the capability side. The investor question it answers is not what an agent can do, but how a business can assess and document that use in a defensible way. SAP has not quantified the economic contribution, and the announcement is best read as a strategic addition — the company is addressing oversight requirements, not just performance.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

Work on the surrounding plumbing is advancing in parallel. On Thursday, SAP unveiled extensions to its Business Data Cloud, including support for Apache Iceberg and Apache Polaris plus federated data queries using Dremio technology that avoid moving copies of data. A day earlier, SAP and NTT disclosed a planned collaboration covering SAP Sovereign Cloud and SAP Business AI, with the first focus on combining SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site with infrastructure and operations managed by NTT.

These initiatives sit on separate layers — data access, operating environment, and AI risk assessment — and should not be mistaken for a finished, integrated solution.

Cloud momentum as the counterweight

The upgrade rests on a business that is still expanding at a healthy clip. In its third-quarter 2026 report roughly two weeks ago, SAP posted a Current Cloud Backlog of €24.1 billion, up 28%, alongside cloud revenue growth of 26% and total revenue growth of 13%. Management also refreshed its 2026 outlook for cloud revenue and for combined cloud and software revenue.

SAP separately published an overview of its Q3 2026 AI innovations — Joule Assistants and specialized agents among them — that included a customer usage figure. That number offers a gauge of how widely the AI portfolio has penetrated the cloud customer base, though its limits are plain: usage does not translate directly into revenue or profit. Product adoption and business growth are distinct measures, and treating them as interchangeable would misread the story.

Skepticism from the peer group

The upgrade arrived amid turbulence. According to a dpa-AFX report, disappointing guidance from ServiceNow and Fortinet weighed on SAP on Thursday as fears spread that AI could disrupt conventional software business models; Reuters carried a similar account of the sector pressure. SAP shares recovered on Friday, adding 0.7% — a positive daily move, though hardly a clean verdict on either the rating change or the usage disclosures.

What emerges is a company reporting robust cloud growth while the market debates what the same technology might do to established software vendors. The customer count sharpens the operational picture; it does not substitute for scrutiny of the financials. And the governance assistant, due to reach early-adopter program members in November, signals where SAP sees unmet demand: enterprises that want to deploy AI agents and still be able to account for their risks under review.
