ServiceNow's Raised AI Target Meets a Street Still Fixated on the Growth Curve

ServiceNow shares shed 3.2% on Friday, extending a retreat that has less to do with what the company just reported than with what investors fear might come next. The sell-off followed a Thursday Reuters report tying the pressure to disappointing quarterly figures and fresh anxiety that artificial intelligence could cannibalize established software offerings. The unease was not confined to ServiceNow — Fortinet and the wider software sector also came under the cosh after its own underwhelming results, leaving the company caught between its own guidance and a jittery industry backdrop.

That distinction matters. The displacement thesis is an investor worry, not a documented loss of business. And the numbers ServiceNow posted on Wednesday point in a rather different direction from the share price.

A quarter that grew, and a stock that didn't

Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 came in at $4.106 billion, up 20.5% year over year. Subscription revenue reached $3.988 billion, a 21% advance. Adjusted earnings per share, however, landed at $1.00 and fell short of expectations — the one line in the report that gave the bears something concrete to work with.

The forward guidance did the rest. Management guided fourth-quarter cRPO growth of 18.5%, a pace below the prior quarter's and, according to Reuters, beneath what the market had been looking for. That cooling in the growth trajectory, rather than any evidence of AI eating the business, is what investors seized on. A decelerating growth rate and a structural displacement are two very different diagnoses, and the reported figures support only the first.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?

Barclays trims the price target, keeps the rating

Analysts, for their part, adjusted without capitulating. Barclays cut its price target to $152 from $160 on Thursday while leaving its Overweight rating in place. The pairing says more than the headline number: the bank marked down its valuation without abandoning its constructive stance on the company. That is hardly an all-clear, but it fits a more cautious read of the momentum rather than a verdict against ServiceNow. An analyst rating alone, of course, is no rebuttal to the AI question either.

Guidance went up, not down

What tends to get lost in the gloom is that ServiceNow raised its full-year outlook on Wednesday — for subscription revenue and for free cash flow margin alike. The annual target for AI contract value was lifted to $1.7 billion for 2026.

That counterweight deserves its place in the ledger. The company did not pair its quarterly report with a broad retrenchment of expectations; it went the other way. Raised targets are still targets, though. They don't substitute for execution, and they don't settle the question of whether AI will eventually weigh on the business.

ServiceNow at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What the market is actually pricing

Strip out the noise and the tension is straightforward: higher corporate ambitions on one side, a more skeptical view of future growth quality on the other. An upgraded AI contract target does not by itself refute displacement fears — and those fears, in turn, do not prove operational weakness. The share price reaction mostly shows that the progress reported wasn't enough to satisfy expectations for how the business will develop from here.

Skepticism about the pace of growth looks warranted. A flat-out displacement call does not. ServiceNow now has to deliver on the expectations it raised, while the pessimistic reading must be measured against actual business results rather than assumed. Neither the bull case nor the bear case has earned the status of established fact.
