Silver's Warehouse Puzzle: Why a 300,000-Ounce Drawdown Doesn't Prove a Shortage

COMEX silver inventories fell 0.3 million ounces to 337.2 million, but analysts say the drop alone doesn't signal a global supply squeeze.

Silver's exchange-held inventories slipped yesterday, but the move says far less about the metal's availability than the headline figure suggests. The CME Group's latest warehouse report puts total COMEX stock at 337.2 million troy ounces, down 0.3 million ounces from the prior tally. That single decline is not enough to support a broad supply-squeeze thesis — offsetting flows between storage hubs and soft industrial demand both limit what the number can tell us.

A mixed picture behind the headline

The question that matters for investors is whether silver is genuinely getting scarcer or simply migrating between locations. One drawdown cannot answer it, which is why developments at other trading centres belong in the analysis.

WisdomTree analyst Nitesh Shah noted on 22 October that COMEX holdings had fallen from their elevated levels of the previous year, while silver stocks in London vaults had risen over the same stretch. The two trends argue against treating lower US inventories as proof of a globally tight market.

Shah also flagged headwinds for industrial silver consumption. Weaker solar demand, alongside thrifting and substitution, is weighing on offtake. Inventory reductions are therefore running up against a demand side that is itself showing softness — though electrification and AI infrastructure could offset some of that drag, in his view. Growth in individual applications does not automatically translate into higher overall silver consumption, which tempers any recovery case built solely on AI infrastructure.

A sixth straight deficit — but no trigger for a rally

The Silver Institute still expects 2026 to deliver the sixth consecutive annual market deficit, projected at 46.3 million ounces according to media reports on Monday. That forecast describes an anticipated supply gap; it is not evidence of an imminent price rebound.

Additional demand could emerge from India, where a distinction must be drawn between approved imports and metal actually purchased. New import permissions create room to move; they do not yet confirm matching inflows. Commerzbank commodities analyst Carsten Fritsch pointed on Friday to dealer comments reported by Bloomberg and Reuters: India had granted import licences for 6,000–6,500 tonnes of silver over the following six months. Reuters reported on Sunday that the approvals cover roughly 6,500 tonnes and are intended to secure supply for the festive season, with Dhanteras on 6 November a key date for seasonal buying. Bloomberg had earlier reported that dealers, despite the easing, expected demand below the prior year's level ahead of Diwali.

The licences give traders and banks room to operate. Whether they turn into extra shipments depends on how those permits are used — making the volume actually delivered, not the volume authorised, the figure investors should watch.

Rates remain the near-term counterweight

Beyond physical demand, the monetary policy outlook is pressing on the metal. Reuters reported on Friday that higher energy prices were amplifying inflation worries and expectations of a more restrictive US stance, a rate outlook that weighed on non-yielding precious metals. According to n-tv, rising oil prices, inflation concerns and the prospect of a longer restrictive Fed path pressured the silver market on Thursday.

Silber Preis at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Spot silver last stood at 54.41 USD per troy ounce, a daily gain of 0.7% that signals a modest recovery without resolving the tension between potential supply relief and uncertain demand impulses. The prior session's close came in at 54.38 USD. Many market participants expect unchanged rates at the Fed decision announced for today, AP reported.

A durable recovery would need the constructive signals — warehouse drawdowns and possible Indian imports — to outweigh the industrial headwinds. So far the inventory data supply only part of that picture.
