SK Hynix shares rose 6.4% on Monday, lifted by a brighter mood toward AI spending across Asia's chip sector and by speculation over a possible special dividend — two forces investors would do well to keep apart. The first is industry-wide sentiment, not a company announcement. The second has not been confirmed by the company at all.

At the heart of the rally is Bloomberg's report that Anthropic has filed for a US initial public offering. The prospect has refocused attention on AI investment and spilled over into memory-chip names, SK Hynix among them. A filing, though, is neither a completed listing nor a fresh business commitment to the South Korean group.

The stock was quoted at KRW 1,279,000.00, up 97% since the start of the year, though it still sits 57% below its 52-week high. Monday's advance therefore rests on two different expectations: growing confidence in the AI backdrop and hopes for extra capital returns. Only the latter can SK Hynix settle with a decision of its own.

Payout Talk Draws a Firm Denial

That decision is due on October 28, when the company reports third-quarter results and sets out its shareholder-return measures — subject to board approval. Until then, the payout question stays open. SK Hynix said on Monday that it is reviewing various ways to reward shareholders and has not settled on any specific step, leaving the special dividend neither confirmed nor ruled out.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

The speculation originated in a media report of a special dividend worth roughly KRW 16 trillion ($12 billion). Dong-A Ilbo floated proceeds from a sale of the company's Kioxia stake as a possible source of funding — a link that remains part of the report, not a financing decision by SK Hynix. The scale explains the attention, but it should not be read as a settled entitlement. Reviewing a distribution and committing to one are very different things.

Dalian Upgrade Proceeds, Solidigm Financing Shelved

On the industrial side, SK Hynix is pushing ahead with a technology upgrade at its plant in Dalian, China. According to Reuters, people familiar with the plans say NAND memory output there is to shift from 192 layers to 240 layers or more.

Financing for a subsidiary has taken a different turn. On Friday the group paused, for now, its review of a pre-IPO funding round and a planned US listing for Solidigm, citing conditions in the capital markets and the movement of share prices. Management is not abandoning expansion: SK Hynix said it will keep examining alternative ways to fund Solidigm's growth.

A Date to Reconcile Hope With Decisions

Wednesday brings the hard numbers. Quarterly results are due before 9:00 a.m. Seoul time on October 28, followed at 9:00 a.m. by an interpreted call for analysts and investors. That schedule gives the market a concrete occasion to test its payout hopes against what the board actually approves — and to see whether the AI optimism that carried the stock on Monday is matched by the order book.
