SK Hynix has shelved the pre-IPO review and public offering it had been weighing for its Solidigm subsidiary, yet the chipmaker insists the decision leaves both the unit's growth prospects and its investment requirements untouched. The distinction matters for anyone holding the stock: what has been dropped is one possible funding route, not the expansion itself.

A US plant stays on the drawing board

Existing production sites, the company says, will not cover the mounting demand for AI memory. Solidigm currently manufactures exclusively in Dalian, China, and a first fab on the US East Coast remains the plan. Timing, scale and financing are all still under review.

That separates the industrial case for expansion from the question of how to pay for it. The pre-IPO and IPO review halted today was one of several options under examination. SK Hynix cites volatile capital markets and the trajectory of semiconductor equities as the reasons behind the move.

According to media reports, retained earnings, loans and bonds are among the alternatives, with direct investment also still on the table. No final financing decision has been reached.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Profits today, capital needs tomorrow

Solidigm generated revenue of KRW 12.2507 trillion and a net profit of KRW 5.8396 trillion in the first half of 2026. The subsidiary is already contributing earnings even as further expansion demands fresh money.

Its operating performance explains why SK Hynix is holding firm on investment plans despite the changed funding path. The planned capacity build-out also lands in a market where memory prices are expected to rise.

TrendForce forecasts that NAND contract prices will climb 15% to 20% in the fourth quarter of 2026 compared with the prior three months. That is a projection, not a price increase already booked.

The distinction is central to how the story should be read: higher prices could support the business, but they substitute neither for secured financing nor for the decisions still pending on the size of the new plant.

Shareholder protection narrows the options

Had the listing gone ahead, SK Hynix says, proceeds could have funded more than production capacity. Dividends, share buybacks and share cancellations were among the possible uses. With the review stopped, that external avenue is closed for now.

South Korean authorities had separately raised concerns about a dual listing and about shareholder protection. The prospect of outside investors taking a stake in Solidigm had stirred worries about diluting SK Hynix shareholders' economic interest.

The core trade-off therefore stands: SK Hynix wants to finance Solidigm's growth while safeguarding the interests of existing owners. The halted review answers the IPO question but not the one about capital provision. What counts for valuation from here is concrete decisions on the size, timetable and funding of the US build-out.

Dalian upgrade adds a second front

Work is also advancing in China. On Wednesday the company said it would install equipment in Dalian in coordination with the US government. Reuters reported that the target is NAND products with at least 240 layers, up from 192 currently.

The report noted that plans and approval status were not fully clarified. A modernization in progress is not proof of production capacity available down the road.

Uncertainty also hangs over equipment shipments to China. Reuters reported on October 14 that a new US NAND fab for Solidigm was tied to additional US approvals for Dalian. SK Hynix rejected such a linkage, according to a media report dated October 16, so it should not be treated as a fixed condition in any assessment.

What the bulls can point to

An analyst note published on October 12 offers the optimistic case. It reaffirmed a buy rating and lifted the price target to KRW 3.2 million, projecting operating profit of KRW 80.1 trillion for the third quarter of 2026. These are expectations, not reported results.

SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The rationale cited higher DRAM and NAND shipments, firmer pricing and a growing HBM contribution. Should the upcoming figures confirm that direction, the operating growth case would gain support — and forgoing the reviewed listing options would not have to be read as a retreat from Solidigm's expansion.

Doubts about the economics of heavy AI spending form the counterweight. According to media reports, those concerns weighed on SK Hynix today as well. An upbeat view of memory demand alone is not enough for an investment case; the terms on which further growth can be financed matter just as much.

The combination that would hurt most is weaker earnings paired with harder financing. In that scenario, questions about the payback on AI outlays would collide directly with Solidigm's capital needs.

The October 28 print becomes the next marker

The next hard catalyst is the third-quarter 2026 earnings release on October 28 before 9 a.m. Seoul time, with a conference call announced to follow. Investors should keep confirmed results, guidance and still-open financing options in separate boxes.

As long as operating momentum supports growth expectations and alternative funding is being explored, a continuation of Solidigm's expansion remains possible. A concrete financing solution would say more than the mere continuation of a review. Should earnings expectations topple while capital markets stay difficult, the room to maneuver would narrow.
