SK Hynix Rises 4.7% as Solidigm Shelves Listing Plans, Putting Funding Strategy Under the Microscope
Published on 10/23/2026 at 11:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix shares climbed 4.7% on Wednesday after its subsidiary Solidigm called off a review of both a pre-IPO financing round and a potential stock market listing. The Korean memory maker attributed the day's recovery to that decision. Solidigm cited capital market conditions and the share price performance as reasons for pulling the process.
The distinction matters. Scrapping a review alters the financing roadmap; it says nothing on its own about higher revenue or profits. What investors rewarded was a capital markets decision, made before the next set of business figures has to demonstrate whether their expectations hold up.
Other financing and investment options for Solidigm will continue to be examined. That leaves neither an alternative funding arrangement agreed nor the expansion cancelled. For shareholders, the two statements need to be kept apart: one possible route has fallen away, while the search for others carries on.
A Buyback Already in the Books
The Solidigm news is not the only capital measure in play. SK Hynix completed an early share buyback on Wednesday, acquiring 24.07 million shares for 40.0434 trillion won, according to media reports. The company said all repurchased shares would be cancelled.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
The procedural stages deserve separation: the buyback is finished, the cancellation has been announced. Treating the two as one would claim more completion than has actually been reported. For framing today's move, it is enough to note that SK Hynix has implemented a concrete capital measure independent of the Solidigm decision.
Doubts About AI Spending Linger
The backdrop is hardly uniform. Concerns about the economics of heavy AI investment have been weighing on the sector, and media reports said those worries also pressured SK Hynix on Wednesday. An optimistic view of memory demand alone therefore falls short as an investment case. Just as important is the question of under what conditions further growth could be financed.
That makes financial viability the central test — the link between expected earning power and fundable expansion. The review that ended today does not answer it. It does, however, shift attention to the alternatives SK Hynix intends to keep exploring for Solidigm. It is not merely a question of whether extra capital would be available in principle; investors would also need to judge whether its terms fit the growth outlook. Only a fleshed-out alternative would show how the US capacity expansion might be financed. Until then, a possible solution should not be valued as secured funding.
Meritz Lifts Its Target
An optimistic valuation perspective was already on the table before today's announcement. Meritz Securities raised its price target for SK Hynix from 3.1 million won to 3.2 million won, according to media reports on October 12, while reaffirming its buy recommendation. The broker projected an operating profit of 80.1 trillion won for the third quarter of 2026 — expectations, not reported results.
Its reasoning cited higher DRAM and NAND shipments, firmer prices and a growing HBM contribution. Should the upcoming figures confirm that direction, the operating growth argument would gain support, and the dropped listing options would not automatically read as a retreat from Solidigm's build-out plans.
Dalian Upgrade Still Needs Washington
SK Hynix is also pushing ahead with technology in Dalian. On Wednesday the company said it would install equipment there in coordination with the US government. Reuters reported the aim is NAND products with at least 240 layers, up from 192. Plans and approval status were not fully clarified, according to that report. In the favourable scenario, operational strength and technological progress could support the search for workable financing; a secured implementation cannot be inferred from them.
The counterargument is serious: good demand expectations alone settle neither financing nor approval questions. SK Hynix explicitly named capital market conditions as the reason for ending the review. If those stay unfavourable, selecting other funding routes could remain demanding. Add the uncertainty over equipment shipments to China: Reuters reported on October 14 that a new US NAND fab for Solidigm was tied to additional US approvals for Dalian. SK Hynix rejected such a linkage, according to a media report dated October 16, so it should not enter any valuation as a fixed condition. The more recent Reuters report on Wednesday nonetheless noted that plans and licence status were not fully determined, leaving execution risk on the table. A sought-after modernisation is not yet proof of future production capacity.
SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The most damaging combination would be weaker returns paired with harder financing — doubts about the economics of high AI spending would then collide directly with Solidigm's capital needs.
October 28 Is the Next Catalyst
The next concrete checkpoint is the third-quarter 2026 earnings release on October 28, before 9 a.m. Seoul time, with a conference call announced afterwards. Those numbers can sharpen the operating side of the debate, though they cannot substitute for a financing decision on Solidigm. They could help gauge whether expectations for the memory business offer a solid basis for further investment.
As long as operating development supports growth expectations and alternative financing is being explored, a continuation of Solidigm's expansion remains possible. A concrete funding solution would say more than the mere continuation of a review. Should earnings expectations topple while capital market conditions stay difficult, the room for manoeuvre would narrow. Investors should therefore distinguish between confirmed results, forecasts and a financing option that remains open — and measure today's rebound against the business figures rather than against a single funding decision.
