SK Hynix's HBM4 Yield Report Lands Alongside a Dalian Licence Snag
Published on 11/07/2026 at 16:52 | Editorial boerse-global.deA 10% single-day slide in SK Hynix shares, swept up in a global selloff of AI and semiconductor names, tells you very little about the company. Two far more concrete data points emerged this week: a reported HBM4 yield in the mid-60% range, and a Reuters report that US officials have held up export licences for chipmaking equipment bound for the company's Dalian fab in China.
Both matter more than the tape. One speaks to whether SK Hynix can convert AI memory demand into reliably deliverable product; the other asks whether it can equip its plants to do so at all.
Yield Is the Number That Counts
According to media reports, SK Hynix's HBM4 manufacturing yield has reached the mid-60% range — described as the highest in the industry. That is a reported assessment, not a production metric confirmed by the company. It counts in SK Hynix's favour only if the figure holds through the broader ramp.
The company said on 28 October that HBM4 is expected to become its dominant product in the fourth quarter of 2026. A yield reading in the mid-60s would be a favourable signal for that transition, provided it survives full-scale production. The strength of the business case rests on whether an announced product shift becomes a dependable ramp — a good interim reading supports SK Hynix as long as execution keeps pace with its own expectations.
A Licence Logjam in Dalian
Reuters reported on Tuesday that US representatives held up export licences SK Hynix had applied for to supply its Dalian site with chipmaking equipment. That is a specific policy hurdle, and it carries particular weight because it bears directly on the planned tooling of an existing company location.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
The same report put the proposed investment by SK Hynix subsidiary Solidigm in New York at roughly $45 billion, a figure that could reach about $100 billion over time. The scale underscores the strategic importance of the American investment plans. Investors should be precise about status: the US investment is proposed, while the export licences were held up, according to the report. Progress on approvals would strengthen confidence in the production plan; sustained obstacles would justify a more cautious assessment.
Where Demand Meets Deliverability
On the demand side, SK Hynix has already provided a key anchor: long-term agreements cover more than 50% of production capacity for 2027–2028, according to the company. Management also expects the imbalance between memory supply and demand to persist until 2030 — a company forecast, but one that underpins its capacity plans.
Contracted volume gives planning certainty, yet its economic value depends on SK Hynix actually producing and shipping the committed product. That is why order coverage and manufacturing yield belong in the same analysis. The company has also named a concrete deadline for expansion: M15X is to be ramped to maximum capacity by year-end to boost HBM4 output.
The Earnings Counterweight
The third-quarter 2026 figures published on 28 October show considerable financial strength: revenue of 104.6155 trillion won, operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won and net profit of 39.7756 trillion won. That profitability is the strongest counterargument to a valuation driven purely by political risk — but its weight remains tied to SK Hynix's ability to expand production and serve expected demand.
Customer proximity is part of that effort. On Monday the company reported the establishment of a US Americas headquarters under Ahn Hyun to strengthen collaboration with American clients on customised AI memory. A further report on Tuesday described rising orders for SOCAMM2 circuit boards ahead of the ramp of Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform, while pointing to bottlenecks in copper-clad laminates and other materials.
The common thread is that the AI memory boom increasingly demands industrial execution. SK Hynix brings long-term contracted demand, high reported earnings and reported HBM4 progress together. How durable that combination proves will be settled on the production line — and at the licence desk.
