SK Hynix shares climbed 3.8% on Thursday, riding a rebound in South Korean chip stocks that media reports attributed to pension fund buying and robust semiconductor exports. Those exports jumped 259.4% year-on-year in October. A separate report put the day's gain at 4.9%, with domestic institutional investors stepping in even as US semiconductor names suffered a sharp selloff.

Either way, the advance has nothing to do with fresh corporate news. It is a market-level move, and the company-specific story sits elsewhere — in Wednesday's record third-quarter 2026 results and in what management says about memory supply through the end of the decade.

Record numbers, and a contract-backed outlook

Revenue for the quarter reached 104.6155 trillion won, with operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won and net income of 39.7756 trillion won. Management credited AI memory demand and higher prices for the performance — a combination of volume and a friendlier pricing environment.

The more striking disclosure concerns capacity. According to SK Hynix, its DRAM and HBM output is effectively sold out through 2029, and it expects demand to outstrip supply until 2030. That is a forecast, not a reported result, but long-term agreements give it contractual ballast: such deals already cover more than 50% of total production capacity for 2027 and 2028. For investors, that distinction matters — signed commitments carry more weight than a demand expectation alone.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

On the product front, SK Hynix expects HBM4 to overtake HBM3E in both shipments and revenue during the fourth quarter of 2026, tying its outlook to a concrete generational handover within its portfolio.

Capital returns on a scale to match

The shareholder package is substantial. SK Hynix has earmarked more than 30 trillion won in cash dividends plus over 60 trillion won for buybacks and share cancellations. These are announced intentions rather than completed measures, and they add a second leg to the investment case alongside the memory upcycle.

Analysts split on direction of travel

Street reactions have picked up both threads. Wedbush raised its price target on Wednesday from 2.56 million to 3 million won while keeping its "Outperform" rating, citing stronger-than-expected memory prices, higher shipments and the enlarged capital return program — not the quarterly print alone.

BNK Investment & Securities followed on Thursday, lifting its target from 1.48 million to 1.65 million won on better-than-expected second-half results and higher expected HBM prices.

Not every note pointed the same way. Cantor Fitzgerald cut its target on 26 October from $300 to $250 while retaining an "Overweight" rating — a lower marker paired with a still-positive recommendation, rather than a reversal on the stock.

SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Solidigm IPO shelved

One corporate decision removes an option from the table entirely. On 23 October SK Hynix ended its review of pre-IPO and IPO possibilities for subsidiary Solidigm, pointing to capital market conditions and the interests of SK Hynix and existing shareholders. Thursday's market rebound does nothing to reopen a process that has been formally closed.

What remains to be proven is whether the scarcity and pricing environment SK Hynix describes actually persists. The record quarter is banked; the shortage through 2030 is still a projection.
