SK Hynix's Record Quarter Collides With a Washington Paper Trail
Published on 11/07/2026 at 12:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix shares closed at 1,132,000.00 KRW on Friday after a 10% drop, caught in a broad selloff of AI-related stocks that rippled from Wall Street into Asian chipmakers. Two worries did the damage: the possible fallout from the US midterm elections for data-centre development, and a Reuters report that American officials have been slow-walking export licences SK Hynix needs to equip its plant in Dalian, China.
The political anxiety is the softer of the two. Investors fear that the midterm outcome could bring tighter restrictions on data-centre construction, which would in turn damp demand for AI chips and the infrastructure built around them. That remains a fear, not a confirmed new regulation. The licence delay is the more concrete hurdle, because it bears directly on the company's ability to fit out a site it already operates.
A US Investment Plan With a Chinese Bottleneck
Reuters reported on Tuesday that US representatives had held up approvals for American chipmaking equipment destined for Dalian. The same report put the proposed investment by SK Hynix subsidiary Solidigm in New York at roughly $45 billion, a figure that could climb to about $100 billion over time. The scale of that American commitment sits awkwardly beside the Chinese equipment logjam — one is a proposal, the other a stalled application — and investors would do well to keep the two statuses distinct.
What the report did not deliver was a completed agreement. Talks are described as ongoing, with no deal announced. Progress on the licences would shore up confidence in the production roadmap; a continued impasse would argue for a more cautious read on the equity.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
The Earnings Counterweight
Against those political headwinds stands a formidable profit base. On 28 October, SK Hynix reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of 104.6155 trillion KRW and operating profit of 83.3338 trillion KRW. Net profit came in at 39.7756 trillion KRW.
The company was explicit that these figures are preliminary and subject to the closing audit — they are not yet finally audited results. Even so, the profitability is the strongest counterargument to a valuation driven purely by regulatory risk. Its weight, however, is conditional: it holds only if SK Hynix can expand output and meet the demand it expects.
Contracts Cover Half of 2027–28 Capacity
Management said long-term agreements already cover more than 50% of production capacity for 2027–2028, and it expects the imbalance between memory supply and demand to persist through 2030. The contracted cover improves visibility, provided the agreed volumes can actually be built and shipped; the supply-demand forecast remains a company projection rather than a market fact.
SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
On expansion, SK Hynix offered one hard date: M15X is to be ramped to full capacity by the end of the year, lifting HBM4 output.
Weighing it all, the operating strength carries the day — but only if the capacity build-out stays on track and the licensing obstacles are cleared. Earnings and long-term contracts provide a solid starting point. The next gain in confidence will have to come from executed production plans, since that is where the balance between political risk and earning power will ultimately be struck.
