SK Hynix's Solidigm Detour Leaves a Capital Question Mark Ahead of October 28
Published on 10/24/2026 at 22:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix shares climbed 4.4% on Thursday as investors welcomed the company's decision to stop exploring a pre-IPO financing round and a possible US listing of its Solidigm subsidiary. But the relief rally tells only half the story. The Korean memory maker still intends to fund Solidigm's expansion, and it has yet to say how.
The subsidiary, which makes enterprise SSDs for AI data centers, has not seen its growth prospects or capital needs change, according to the company. SK Hynix continues to weigh financing options for additional US production capacity. The size and timing of those investments remain undecided, and no alternative funding solution has been settled on.
A Listing That Never Was
The review that was shelved on Wednesday had been intended to ease the investment burden and, in the process, free up room for distributions and share buybacks. Media reports had floated an offering that could have raised up to $15 billion, with a valuation of as much as $150 billion mentioned. Neither figure was ever a confirmed company target, and neither represents committed financing SK Hynix can now draw on.
The company attributed the decision to capital-market conditions and the trajectory of semiconductor stocks, and it spelled out the halted review process in a mandatory filing with the US securities regulator. The regulatory debate formed the backdrop; SK Hynix did not cite it as the immediate reason.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
That backdrop was not trivial. Shareholders had pushed back against a separate listing of the unit, and South Korean authorities raised concerns about minority-shareholder protection while examining whether the transaction would fall under dual-listing rules. Dropping the plan therefore serves one set of investor interests without resolving the other.
iM Securities Flags the Other Side of the Ledger
iM Securities has warned that less external capital means a heavier investment load for the parent. The tension is straightforward: shielding existing shareholders from the contentious consequences of a subsidiary listing is not the same as relieving the group's finances. How SK Hynix squares that circle — funding Solidigm's growth while strengthening value for current owners — is now the central question for investors.
The positive market reaction extended beyond the share price. Institutional investors bought a net 596.1 billion won worth of SK Hynix stock on Thursday, according to media reports. The trading took place against a jittery market, with worries about AI spending and credit risk weighing on Korean equities. Company-specific relief met a session in which investors were also weighing broader risks.
The Buyback Is Already Done
Worth setting alongside the Solidigm news is the share buyback that concluded early on Wednesday. All repurchased shares are to be cancelled, per the company. The completed purchase and the announced full cancellation are two separate steps, and the buyback sits alongside the search for alternative Solidigm financing as a distinct use of capital — both touching the same investor question of how SK Hynix allocates funds between growth and shareholder returns.

October 28 Is the Next Real Test
The next confirmed date on the calendar is third-quarter 2026 results, due on October 28 before 9 a.m. Seoul time, followed by a Korean-English interpreted conference call. Analysts expect operating profit of around 77 trillion won — an estimate, not a reported figure.
The headline number alone will not settle matters. Equally important for judging capital allocation will be concrete details on the funding route, the scale of investment and the timeline. So far, SK Hynix has given no schedule for a replacement financing plan. Thursday's rebound signals relief over diminished dilution concerns; it does not substitute for scrutiny of the operating results — or of the bill that still has to be paid.
