SK Hynix's Solidigm Retreat Lifts the Stock, but the Real Bill Comes Due on October 28
Published on 10/24/2026 at 11:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deSK Hynix shares climbed 4.7% after the company confirmed it had halted a review of a potential initial public offering and pre-funding for its US subsidiary Solidigm — a decision disclosed to the SEC in a mandatory filing and attributed by the company to capital-market conditions and the trajectory of equity prices. The move landed during a broader correction in semiconductor stocks, yet investors read it as something more than a retreat: media reports suggest shareholders had pushed back against the listing over fears the parent would be valued at a discount, and the withdrawal removes that particular overhang.
What the decision does not do is commit a single won to shareholder returns. That distinction matters, because the market's enthusiasm has run ahead of what has actually been signed off. A separate listing of the subsidiary had raised the spectre of a valuation gap between Solidigm and its parent — a concern that had drawn open resistance from shareholders, according to media accounts. Pulling the review settles that argument. It says nothing about distributions, and nothing about how the business will perform.
A Buyback Already Banked
The financial backdrop is more concrete. On Wednesday, SK Hynix wrapped up a ?40 trillion share repurchase programme, roughly a month ahead of its scheduled completion on 19 November. That is money already spent, not money promised. Additional returns remain an expectation rather than a resolution.
Analysts reportedly anticipate at least ?30 trillion in further shareholder returns, with buybacks and share cancellations seen as more likely than dividends. No confirmed decision on the size of any additional measures has been made. The company has said it will present further shareholder-return measures alongside its third-quarter results on 28 October 2026.

The Earnings Bar Is Set High
Those results carry weighty consensus forecasts. FnGuide's third-quarter 2026 estimate stands at ?98.2257 trillion in revenue and ?76.964 trillion in operating profit — projections, not reported figures. Against the prior year, that implies revenue growth of 301.76% and an operating-profit increase of 576.11%.
A headline profit number alone will not settle the debate. Investors want to know how much capital SK Hynix needs for its own expansion and how much room that leaves for returns. Strong earnings are not a pledge to distribute.
Solidigm Still Needs Paying For
The shelved listing has not shrunk Solidigm's ambitions. The subsidiary has reaffirmed plans for a new NAND fab in the US despite the abandoned IPO route. Funding options under consideration include a capital injection from SK Hynix, bonds, or bank loans — no final choice has been made.
The unit's earning power gives it a case. Solidigm posted ?12 trillion in revenue and ?6 trillion in net profit in the first half of 2026. Its debt-to-equity ratio stood at 141% at the end of that period, which is why fresh credit, bond issuance and parent funding represent materially different ways of carrying the expansion without the intended listing proceeds.
SK Hynix has its own fab commitments to weigh. It plans ?19 trillion of investment in M17 at Cheongju, with production slated to begin in the first half of 2029. Capital allocation therefore stretches beyond the parent-subsidiary relationship to the ranking of several projects against shareholder returns.

Dalian Adds Another Line Item
Operational spending is moving in parallel. Reuters reported on Wednesday that SK Hynix is upgrading its Dalian plant for more advanced memory output, with people familiar with the matter saying the company was weighing a shift from 192-layer NAND to at least 240 layers. SK Hynix told Reuters that equipment installation is being coordinated with the US government.
When the quarterly report lands on 28 October, confirming strong profit will be the easy part. The harder test is how SK Hynix reconciles the returns it has hinted at with the expansion it has already committed to — and how it pays for both.
