SoftBank Group confirmed its interim dividend on Friday, sticking to a payout of 5.50 JPY per share with a record date of September 30 and payment scheduled for December 2. The total cash distribution comes to 31,346 million JPY. The confirmation lands at an awkward moment: concerns about how the conglomerate will fund its artificial intelligence commitments have been weighing on the stock and on its credit profile.

A Bond Retired Ahead of Schedule

Alongside the dividend, SoftBank disclosed that it had completed the early redemption of all outstanding euro-denominated senior notes carrying a 2.875% coupon. The repayment and cancellation took place on Thursday, well ahead of the notes' original maturity of January 6, 2027. The move clears one line item from a balance sheet that investors are watching closely.

They have reason to. Bloomberg reported on October 20 that SoftBank's credit default swaps had climbed to their highest level in nearly four years, citing worries about the financing of its AI investments and the prospect of a large acquisition. On Thursday, rising funding costs and doubts about the durability of those AI bets dragged on the shares, according to Bloomberg, with results from major US companies doing little to calm nerves over AI spending. The stock recovered 1.3% on Friday.

Allied Universal Talks Add to the Funding Question

Speculation about a major deal has centered on Allied Universal. Reuters reported on October 16 that SoftBank was weighing an acquisition of the US security services provider, a transaction that could value the company at around $18 billion. Talks were described as early-stage, no final decision had been made, and SoftBank declined to comment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank Group?

The scale of SoftBank's existing AI exposure is already substantial. The group has invested a total of $64.6 billion in OpenAI and says it holds roughly 13%. The most recent tranche of $10 billion was financed through bond proceeds.

The Other Risk: Deadlines, Not Just Dollars

Capital is only half the story. SoftBank's AI buildout also carries execution risk, and one project illustrates it sharply. According to the Wall Street Journal and SB Energy's IPO filings, a campus for OpenAI is planned in Ohio with a designed capacity of 10 gigawatts. A 9.2-gigawatt gas-fired power plant is meant to supply it — a plant SB Energy neither owns nor operates, meaning delivery depends on energy infrastructure outside its own control.

The lease terms make the calendar economically critical. For every day of delay, OpenAI receives one free base rent day; after 90 days, that becomes two per day. A full year of delay would translate into 640 free rental days, the report said. Such concessions could erode future rental income, turning construction progress into a question of project economics rather than mere operations.

SoftBank Group at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

No data centers have opened yet. Nor has a completed capital raise been announced, leaving investors to weigh pending operational tests against an open capital-markets timetable. The combination of construction obligations and a postponed IPO shows why lofty project valuations say little on their own about execution certainty — actual commissioning and adherence to contractual schedules will be the deciding factors.

SoftBank's next scheduled checkpoint is its fiscal 2026 second-quarter earnings report on November 10, covering the six months through September 30, 2026. Until then, SB Energy offers a concrete yardstick for risk assessment: raising capital is only part of the job. Reliable construction and operations have to follow.
