SoftBank Ties Up Loose Ends While AI Funding Worries Rattle Its Shares
Published on 11/01/2026 at 13:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deSoftBank Group has cleared two items of housekeeping in quick succession, declaring an interim payout and retiring a euro-denominated bond ahead of schedule — moves that landed as investors were busy fretting over how the Japanese conglomerate will pay for its artificial-intelligence ambitions.
The board signed off on an interim dividend of JPY 5.50 per share on 23 October, with payment scheduled for 2 December 2026. Company figures put the total distribution at JPY 31,346 million.
On the same day, SoftBank confirmed it had fully repaid and cancelled all outstanding senior notes denominated in euros carrying a 2.875% coupon. The redemption was settled on 22 October, well before the paper's scheduled maturity of 6 January 2027. SoftBank said no bonds from that issue remain outstanding.

A Rough Session, Then a Rebound
The balance-sheet tidying came against a choppy backdrop for the stock. Doubts about the payoff from hefty AI spending weighed on the shares on Friday, with Reuters reporting a selloff in Japanese chip and AI-linked names that dragged SoftBank lower to a close of €25.95. The report pointed not only to questions over whether AI investments will generate adequate returns but also to uncertainty about how the boom will be financed on a sustainable basis.
That slump echoed an earlier bout of nerves. On 22 October, concerns about the funding of AI investments knocked 6.9% off the stock, with higher financing costs and strains in AI-related credit markets cited as the culprits. The picture flipped the following Tuesday, when the shares climbed 7% as an AI-driven rally on Wall Street rippled through Asian technology stocks — a bounce described as part of a broader sector recovery ahead of key corporate earnings and central-bank decisions.
Allied Universal Talk Stays Speculative
Alongside the AI financing debate, reports surfaced about possible dealmaking. Media accounts dated 17 October said SoftBank was weighing a purchase of US security-services provider Allied Universal, citing people familiar with the matter and framing the move as a consideration rather than a done deal. Reuters had reported a day earlier, on 16 October, that such a transaction could value Allied Universal at roughly $18 billion, attributing the figure to a person close to the situation.
