SpaceX's Profit Turnaround Draws a $40 Billion Question Mark

SpaceX shares fell 4.3% on Friday, caught in a broad technology selloff. But the day's trading tells a narrower story than the headlines suggest. Two forces converged on the stock: a souring mood across tech and a fresh wave of shares becoming eligible for sale. Neither amounts to a verdict on the business itself.

The lock-up on roughly 1.3 billion shares expired on October 22, opening the door to potential selling pressure. That is not the same as those shares changing hands. Media coverage also pointed to a weak Intel forecast weighing on sentiment, yet no single cause for the decline has been established. A stock made available for sale is not a stock sold, and a weak tech tape does not mean every company in it delivered bad news.

A Quarter That Cuts Both Ways

The numbers SpaceX published on October 20 make a genuine case for the company. Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 came in at $14.57 billion, up 161% year over year. That is growth with real business underneath it, not a story told without substance.

The bottom line improved too. SpaceX posted a net profit of $4.40 billion, swinging from a loss of $1.05 billion a year earlier. That move into the black deserves weight in any valuation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?

What the results do not do is settle the next question. They document how far the company has come; they do not pre-approve the returns on what it plans to spend next. A strong quarter and the profitability of additional AI infrastructure are separated by an operational test that has yet to be run.

Apollo Deal Sets the Scale, Not the Return

On October 26, SpaceX said a subsidiary of Apollo Global Management would buy AI chips and server hardware and lease it back to the company. Total payments are expected to reach about $40 billion. The equipment involves NVIDIA Vera Rubin graphics processors and related gear. SpaceX expects the deal to close before the end of 2026, with individual lease agreements starting once hardware is delivered in the first half of 2027. Both dates remain company expectations, not completed steps.

For investors, the structure answers how SpaceX gets the hardware. It does not answer what that hardware will earn. Equating the $40 billion in payments with an immediate cash outlay would be wrong, and so would reading the announcement as proof of a successful investment. Leased infrastructure still has to justify itself economically.

Operational Wins, Operational Friction

The company has kept up its launch cadence. On Tuesday it carried another group of satellites to orbit, and the Falcon 9 first stage landed successfully. Those missions demonstrate activity in the field, though they explain neither the tech selloff nor its effect on the share price.

Reuters also reported Friday that speed restrictions on Ukraine's use of SpaceX services lasted ten days in October, hampering drone defense and operations during active attacks. The report should not be retrofitted into an explanation for the stock decline. It does, however, serve as a reminder that service performance sits alongside financing and growth on the list of things worth watching.

Skepticism about the pace of spending is fair. Writing off the entire business on the back of one down day is too blunt. SpaceX does not just have to keep growing; it has to show that its next round of outlays earns its keep. That is the standard the valuation should be held to.
