Thyssenkrupp: Uhde's Canadian Study Order, a 2.4% Uptick and Two Buy Calls That Survived a Spinoff

Thyssenkrupp shares rose 2.4% on Wednesday, but the gain cannot be pinned on the day's news flow. Thyssenkrupp Uhde disclosed a front-end engineering design (FEED) study contract in Canada, awarded by a subsidiary of CF Industries. The study covers a planned urea liquor finishing plant in Ontario and examines a possible expansion of the site. A signed piece of technical groundwork, in other words — not a decision to build.

That distinction matters more than the intraday move. The contract is confirmed; any follow-on business remains a possibility. Anyone reading the announcement should treat it as project preparation, not as a secured plant-construction order.

What the Study Does and Does Not Cover

According to Thyssenkrupp Uhde, the project could eventually enable more than 400,000 short tons of diesel exhaust fluid per year. That figure sits explicitly behind a positive final investment decision. It describes the scale of what is being examined, not output that has been approved.

So the question is not whether the study demonstrates technical feasibility. It is whether CF Industries chooses to proceed. Only a green light would carry the project beyond its current review phase. Even then, a positive investment decision would not automatically translate into a further order for Uhde — the scope of any additional work would still have to be defined.

In the favourable case, front-end planning leads to a positive sanction and Uhde picks up further services, turning today's study into added business. The meaningful step would be a concretely commissioned next stage, not the mere continuation of the review. If the investment decision goes the other way, the basis for the examined expansion disappears entirely. Until CF Industries rules on implementation, the Canadian venture belongs in the opportunity column, not the earnings column. The share price gain alone does not answer that commercial question.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Thyssenkrupp?

Two Buy Ratings, Two Lower Targets

Analyst reaction the same day offered a broadly constructive but nuanced read. Deutsche Bank Research cut its price target to EUR 17 from EUR 18 while keeping its buy recommendation. Bastian Synagowitz adjusted his valuation model to reflect the spinoff of tk accelis, completed the previous day, according to dpa-AFX.

DZ Bank likewise stayed at "Buy" but trimmed its fair value to EUR 15 from EUR 16. Analyst Dirk Schlamp called the stock market debut of the former materials trading division the next transformation milestone, and flagged the independence of Steel Europe as the larger challenge still ahead.

The lower targets should be read against the changed group structure, not as a straightforward downgrade. A model recalibration and the assessment of a new operating project sit on different planes. The Canadian study order may add to the operational picture; it does not substitute for a valuation of what remains of the group. Equally, the reaffirmed recommendations are no proof that the restructuring has succeeded.

A 51% Anchor and a Financing Built to Stand Alone

Thyssenkrupp spun off 49% of tk accelis and retains 51%. The materials business is now separately listed, yet the economic tie to its former parent stays substantial — the separation is less final than the word suggests. Shareholders received one tk accelis partnership share for every 20 Thyssenkrupp shares, a allocation that belongs in any assessment of the transaction. Looking only at the remaining Thyssenkrupp paper misses half the picture.

The step goes beyond a rebranding. It included a standalone, asset-backed financing arrangement. Organisational and financial independence create the conditions for more responsibility within individual businesses. Whether better results follow is the real test — and the count of separately listed entities is the wrong yardstick. What counts is whether the new structure gives each business more entrepreneurial room and improves its earning power. A separate listing can help; it does not deliver that improvement by itself. The intended evolution into a financial holding is a process, not a reached destination.

Steel Is Where the Story Earns Credibility

Chief executive Miguel Lopez told Reuters the group is preparing a possible stock market listing of the steel division. After failed merger attempts, the stated aim is to sell assets of Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe via the capital markets. That is an intention, not a completed deal — which is precisely why Schlamp's point about the bigger challenge carries weight. The next step will do more to determine how robust the holding concept really is. Success at tk accelis cannot simply be extrapolated to steel.

A date for the next hard look at the numbers is already set: Thyssenkrupp will publish its annual report for fiscal 2025/2026 on 8 December. Alongside the structural plans, the business results will deserve particular attention then.

Weighed up, the spinoff looks like a sensible intermediate step rather than a finish line. The confirmed buy ratings support that cautiously positive view. The new Thyssenkrupp becomes convincing only when greater independence turns into economic progress. Marketable divisions on their own do not yet make a compelling holding — and a single FEED study in Ontario, however welcome, does not change that arithmetic.
