Thyssenkrupp Wins Final Nod on tkH2Steel Subsidy as Duisburg Start Date Slides to 2029
Published on 11/07/2026 at 20:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deThyssenkrupp has locked down the public funding underpinning its flagship green-steel venture in Duisburg, even as the plant itself will come online two years later than first planned. The amended funding notice for the tkH2Steel decarbonisation project is now legally binding, Thyssenkrupp Steel confirmed — a procedural milestone that secures the subsidy envelope for a scheme whose price tag and public support both run into the billions.
Media reports put the cost of the planned direct-reduction plant at roughly EUR 3 billion, with state aid of up to EUR 2 billion. The unit is designed to churn out 2.5 million tonnes of directly reduced iron a year.
Engineering Phase Pushes Back the Clock
Commissioning is now earmarked for 2029 rather than 2027, a delay first reported by Handelsblatt and also carried by dpa-AFX. A company spokesperson pointed chiefly to the engineering phase as the reason for the revised schedule, and the updated EU funding decision reflects the later start. Alongside the subsidy confirmation, Thyssenkrupp Steel said it is preparing a fresh hydrogen tender — the procurement step that will determine how the plant is fed once it is running.
The confirmation of the delay landed on Friday, the same session in which Thyssenkrupp shares closed at EUR 11.86.

Goldman Rebuilds Its Position Above 5%
Investor positioning shifted in parallel. Goldman Sachs reported a threshold crossing for Monday, with its aggregate position in voting rights and instruments climbing to 5.01% from 4.25% — putting the disclosed holding back above the 5% mark. The breakdown matters: shares accounted for just 0.68% of voting rights, while instruments made up 4.34%. In other words, the headline figure is not a like-for-like measure of direct equity ownership, since the bulk of the position sits in instruments rather than stock.
The move reverses an earlier reduction. Goldman had disclosed a decline from 5.08% to 4.25% for 29 October. The subsequent increase spans both share voting rights and instruments in aggregate, not the equity stake alone.
Nucera Fires Up Indian Chlor-Alkali Plant
Away from the steelworks, subsidiary Thyssenkrupp nucera delivered a completed order on Thursday: it commissioned a chlor-alkali plant for Kutch Chemical Industries Limited in India, confirming the step in its own statement. The facility carries an annual production capacity of 220,000 tonnes of caustic soda. The contrast is stark — while the Duisburg direct-reduction unit is still waiting for its first production run, this Indian contract is already up and running.
Thyssenkrupp at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Investors will get the next scheduled update on 8 December 2026, when Thyssenkrupp publishes its 2025/2026 annual report. An annual press conference and an analyst and investor conference are slated for the same day.
