Rising oil prices, a technology rout and turmoil in the French bond market did little to shake the conviction of passive investors last week. Vanguard topped the European ETF league table for calendar week 42, pulling in EUR 2.20 billion in net inflows — more than any other provider on the continent.

The Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Accumulation (ISIN IE00BK5BQT80) accounted for the single largest contribution among all Europe-traded ETFs, attracting EUR 535.2 million.

That vote of confidence landed amid a distinctly unsettled backdrop. Fears of an escalation between the US and Iran pushed Brent crude to $116.72 a barrel, a gain of 3.1% in a single trading session. A global technology selloff added to the unease: the Nasdaq shed 2.6% in one day, according to media reports, while Asian benchmarks such as the Kospi and Hang Seng fell even further. Stretched valuations in the AI sector and rising financing costs for data centres and chip investments were cited as the drag.

Pressure also came from French government debt. The yield on ten-year French sovereign bonds climbed to 5.07% on Thursday of last week, the highest level in 24 years, prompting investors to seek shelter in perceived-safe government paper elsewhere while global equity indices retreated. Reuters reported that the MSCI All-World Index fell 1.3% on 22 October after results from Meta Platforms and plans for a new class of non-voting shares revived doubts about the cost and payoff of AI spending. Attacks by Houthi rebels in Saudi Arabia added further upward pressure on crude, stoking worries about disruptions to energy supply.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Accumulation?

A Global Pattern of Buying

The willingness of investors to keep adding to broad, globally diversified exposure rather than sell into the volatility was not confined to Europe. Equity funds worldwide took in $28.16 billion in the week to 21 October, the fifth consecutive week of positive flows, Reuters reported, citing LSEG Lipper. The data provider pointed to easing Treasury yields and better-than-expected early quarterly results as the backdrop.

The ETF's own price action was muted by comparison. The fund closed Friday at EUR 168.88, down 0.2% on the day and 0.2% weaker over the week. Over 30 days the decline amounts to 0.6%. Even so, the fund remains 16% higher since the start of the year and up 18% over twelve months — evidence that the recent setbacks have yet to break the longer-term advance.

Positioning within that recovery is telling. The ETF sits just 2.9% below its 52-week high of 7 October, close to its previous record, while it stands 21% above its 52-week low from the end of November 2025.

Two Share Classes, Two Records

A notable quirk sits behind the headline flow figure. While the accumulating share class (ISIN IE00BK5BQT80) led the weekly inflow rankings, its distributing sister class, ticker VWRD, had already logged the largest single inflow among all European-listed ETFs in September at $3.07 billion, according to ETFGI. Both track the same index but serve different investor groups — the accumulating class reinvests income automatically, with no distribution dates.

The consistency of demand has held even as anxiety over heavy AI investment built through September, suggesting investors have treated market weakness as an opportunity to add rather than an exit signal.

Fed Decision in Focus

Attention now shifts to the week ahead. The US Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision is due on Wednesday, according to Kiplinger, and quarterly results from major companies are expected to shed further light on AI investment plans. For holders of the Vanguard FTSE All-World, which captures global equity market performance in broad terms, those events are likely to set the near-term direction.
