Investors kept faith with the world's largest European equity ETF even as a fresh oil shock and turmoil in French government debt knocked global markets off balance. The Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Accumulation (ISIN IE00BK5BQT80) attracted net inflows of €535.2 million in the week of October 12 to 16, topping the ranking of European index funds by money taken in, according to Trackinsight data published by ETF Express.

The haul landed squarely in a risk-off stretch. Brent crude jumped roughly 3% to a five-month high after Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and the evacuation of staff from Saudi Aramco's Dhahran headquarters, Reuters reported. Nearly three in four S&P 500 constituents closed lower on Friday, with only energy names drawing support from the rally in crude. Worries over the Iran conflict and doubts about the profitability of multibillion-dollar artificial intelligence spending — already weighing on sentiment since Meta's results — added to the gloom.

A flight to safety that skipped France

Axios described Thursday's trading as a textbook risk-off session: money left equities for government bonds, with French paper the notable exception as its own fiscal and political tensions simmered. Two days earlier, those same strains had already whipsawed bond markets and pushed investors toward havens such as US Treasuries. Yet the Vanguard fund still posted the biggest inflows of any European ETP that week — a sign that investors are increasingly looking past short-term swings and sticking with broadly diversified global equity exposure at the core of their savings plans.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Accumulation?

The pattern is not new. ETFGI data circulated by ETFWorld showed the fund — listed under the ticker VWRD LN — pulling in $3.07 billion in September, making it Europe's best-selling ETF. That figure covers the fund as a whole rather than the accumulating USD share class tracked here. Vanguard itself confirmed $7.5 billion of net inflows across its entire UCITS ETF range in September, without breaking the total down by share class.

Weekly demand has been lumpy but persistent. For October 5 to 9, ETF Express reported €801.4 million flowing into VWCE, the distributing twin of the accumulating line.

Price action stays muted

The ETF closed Friday at €168.88, down 0.2% on the day and 0.2% over the week, while the 30-day move shows a 0.6% pullback. It sits 2.9% below its 52-week high of €174.00, touched on October 7. The longer view is brighter: the fund is up 16% year to date and 18% over twelve months, and it remains 6.1% above its 200-day moving average — a signal that the medium-term uptrend is intact.

With geopolitical escalation in the Middle East and growing skepticism about the cost of AI infrastructure likely to keep sentiment fragile in the near term, a broad index fund like this one mainly absorbs the shock as higher volatility: trouble in single sectors such as technology or energy feeds straight through via their index weights. No structural news on the fund itself — fees or distribution arrangements — has emerged; Vanguard's most recent official notice on the ETF dates to July 21, outside the current news window.
