Vulcan Energy's Lithium Build-Out Presses On While the Market Fixates on 2028
Published on 09/28/2026 at 07:30 | Editorial boerse-global.deA single trading session can say a lot about what investors are thinking, and Friday's 6.3% slide in Vulcan Energy told a familiar story. The stock closed at EUR 1.21, leaving it just 0.8% above its 52-week low — a striking position for a company that has spent the past fortnight ticking off operational milestones.
The disconnect is hard to miss. Vulcan Energy is assembling Europe's most closely watched integrated lithium operation, yet its share price has surrendered 53% since the start of the year. The gap between what the company is building and what the market is willing to pay for it has become the defining feature of the equity story.
A Sector-Wide Chill, Not a Company-Specific Problem
Much of Friday's selling had little to do with Vulcan itself. Renewed doubts about near-term electric vehicle demand and fears of a supply glut rippled through the entire lithium complex. Heavyweights SQM and Albemarle both weakened, and Chinese lithium carbonate prices followed suit — media reports put the September price at 143,000 CNY per tonne.
Layered on top of that were revised reporting methodologies in China that mechanically inflated headline inventory figures, alongside output expansions from Australian producers. For a pre-revenue developer like Vulcan, whose future revenues will ultimately track the prevailing price environment, such sentiment shifts carry outsized weight.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?
Milestones Stacking Up at the Oberrhein
None of that has slowed the company's execution. Roughly a week ago, Vulcan Energy began commercial production of VULSORB, its proprietary lithium extraction adsorbent, manufactured outside China. The material is a critical building block for the Lionheart project, which remains on track for commissioning in the second half of 2028.
That followed a second lithium extraction licence for the brine field in the Upper Rhine Valley, granted by Rhineland-Palatinate's mining authority about two weeks ago. Securing in-house adsorbent supply is designed to shield the operation from external technological dependencies. Between now and first production, however, lies a multi-year construction and ramp-up phase in which the processes must be proven at industrial scale and the remaining build-out coordinated step by step.
Board Restructuring Sets Up the Execution Phase
The operational progress has been matched by changes at the top of the supervisory structure. Angus Barker took over as Non-Executive Chair on 12 September, having previously served as Lead Independent Director and deputy chairman. Founder Dr. Francis Wedin simultaneously stepped back from the Executive Chair role into a dedicated advisory position, where he will focus on the growth portfolio and business development activities.
The split separates strategic oversight from hands-on project stewardship — a structure the company appears to be positioning for the heavy lifting still ahead.
Analyst Support Offers a Counterweight
Not everyone is looking past the equity. On 13 September, Canaccord Genuity reaffirmed its buy rating on the stock, a vote of confidence that sits awkwardly against the recent price action. Whether that call proves prescient depends largely on whether the company can keep to its long-term implementation schedule and manage the permitting and construction risks that come with a project of this scale.
For now, investors seem content to wait and watch. Industrial resource developments demand substantial upfront capital before any revenue materialises, which keeps attention fixed on timeline adherence rather than quarterly headlines. Until commercial production arrives, the valuation will hinge on the intermediate steps landing on schedule — and on the broader lithium market finding its footing.
