Wienerberger Faces a Two-Front Squeeze as Jefferies Opens Coverage With a Hold

Wienerberger's latest guidance cut traces back to pressure on both sides of its business — demand that failed to arrive on schedule and costs that arrived early. The brickmaker had already flagged the softer outlook roughly three weeks before it gathered about 100 executives at its "wienerberger Connect" industry meeting at Linsberg Asia on 15–16 October, where market strain, construction-sector conditions and solutions for building and infrastructure dominated the agenda.

Guidance Cut and the Cost Surge

For full-year 2026, the company now projects EBITDA of EUR 640–650 million. The shortfall stems from a seasonal September recovery that came in weaker than anticipated, compounded by a persistently sluggish residential new-build market — most visibly in the UK, the US and Canada. Energy, raw-material and logistics costs have climbed sharply since late August, prompting Wienerberger to accelerate its cost-optimization program and launch a strategic review.

Management's outlook for the third quarter of 2026 points to revenue of roughly EUR 1.2–1.3 billion and operating EBITDA of about EUR 170–180 million. Those are forward-looking expectations from the company's business guidance, not published quarterly results.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?

Analysts Split on the Recovery Story

Jefferies initiated coverage with a hold rating and a EUR 16 price target, citing a lack of conviction in a US housing rebound and, near term, the company's dependence on the outcome of the strategic review. Berenberg, by contrast, trimmed its target from EUR 25 to EUR 19 about a week earlier while keeping its buy recommendation, pointing to higher mortgage rates and inflation as the drags.

The market's reaction was measured. On Friday the stock slipped 1.5% to EUR 16.14, with the guidance step the fundamental trigger behind the recent downward move.

A New Facade Product Amid the Gloom

There was a concrete product announcement on 15 October: Wienerberger Austria added the Tondach Tonova ceramic facade brick to its building-envelope range. Designed for rear-ventilated curtain walls, the tile is produced from domestic clay at the company's Gleinstätten plant in Styria, according to media reports.

Investors now look to 12 November 2026, when Wienerberger will publish its report for the first nine months of 2026. The same day will bring an update on the strategic review and the accelerated cost-cutting measures — a date that may do more to set the shares' direction than any single quarterly figure.
