Xiaomi's smartphone shipments fell 29% year on year to 30.7 million units in the third quarter, according to figures published by Omdia. The research firm pointed to higher component prices and the company's deepening exposure to price-sensitive markets as the main drags on volume.

Even so, the Chinese group held onto third place worldwide in Q3 2026. Those Omdia numbers cover handsets shipped; the board's review and approval of the unaudited group results is still to come.

A Five-Year Research Pledge

CEO Lei Jun used the World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference on 21 October to set out a substantial increase in research spending. According to media reports, he said Xiaomi intends to invest more than RMB 200 billion in research and development over the next five years, compared with RMB 105.5 billion in the preceding five-year period.

The pledge lands alongside a busy product calendar. Xiaomi unveiled the Redmi Note 17 series, four models in all, in Sri Lanka, and announced an expansion of its smart-home, fitness and lifestyle ecosystem. In China, the Redmi K100 went on sale with pre-orders opening the same day and the sales start set for 31 October. Xiaomi Korea, meanwhile, presented the Smart Band 11 at the Korea Running Expo, which runs until 31 October, and introduced the Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 and 6 Plus in the South Korean market on Monday.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?

Recognition for the Metal Behind the Car

Less conspicuous than any launch is an award handed to a Xiaomi Auto project on 16 October. A programme developing and applying thin aluminium-silicon-coated hot-stamped steel took first prize at the metallurgy science and technology awards, presented by the China Iron and Steel Association and the Chinese Society for Metals.

The distinction concerns a materials project rather than a product announcement, which shifts the focus onto the engineering work that sits behind the visible vehicle. Technical recognition and commercial return, however, are measured on different scales. Treating the two as equivalent skips the step between development achievement and business success.

The same logic applies to Xiaomi Auto's winter service campaign, which began on 14 October across eight northern regions of China. It offers free winter inspections and other seasonal services and runs until 31 March 2027. A vehicle offering does not end at delivery, and materials development and winter care touch different phases of the same product. The checks are a concrete operational measure — neither a side note nor a share-price catalyst, and no proof of greater customer loyalty or additional profit.

The Board Date That Sets the Test

All of this leads back to the numbers. Xiaomi announced on 23 October that its board will meet on 24 November 2026 to review and approve the unaudited results for the third quarter and the first nine months of 2026.

That is the date on which expectations must answer to business figures. The steel prize and the service campaign offer no shortcut: they show concrete activity but do not settle the valuation question on their own. For investors, the sensible approach is to note the engineering, take the operational measures seriously, and avoid confusing either with financial performance. A convincing equity story needs more than good products and awards — it has to pay its way.
