XPeng's Robot Ambitions and Antipodean Retail Push Advance on Separate Tracks

XPeng has reported progress on two fronts that investors would do well to keep apart: small-series output of the solid-state batteries destined for its Iron humanoid robot, and a build-out of its sales and service footprint across Australia and New Zealand ahead of fresh model launches.

Vice-President Gu Jie said Thursday, according to China Business Network, that the battery cells developed for Iron are now rolling off a small-series line. The packs are designed to pack high energy density into a confined space while curbing the risk of thermal runaway, and Gu said they have passed impact and nail-penetration testing among other checks. What remains unresolved is precisely which solid-state chemistry is involved. XPeng pledged at its 2025 Tech Day that Iron would be the industry's first humanoid robot to run on an all-solid-state battery, yet a report dated 3 September pointed to a hybrid pack combining solid and liquid components for the production version. Thursday's update does not settle the question, so the "solid-state" label alone does not confirm that the fully solid design unveiled at Tech Day is already in small-series manufacture.

Battery Milestone Is Not a Robot Milestone

The distinction matters for anyone reading the announcement as a sign that Iron is nearly market-ready. Iron itself remains in the pre-production phase. XPeng intends to move to large-scale output of the robot by the end of 2026, with commercial deployments following in stages from 2027 — in XPeng stores and other commercial settings worldwide, where the company envisages tasks such as shopping advice and product information. The production line for Iron, switched on 8 September, is more than 80% automated across core processes, according to the company. That infrastructure complements the battery news rather than confirming it. Between a small-series cell line and robots at work in stores lie multiple development and manufacturing stages, and no commercial deliveries of Iron have been announced.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XPeng?

66 Sites in Australia, Seven in New Zealand

On the overseas retail side, XPeng said Wednesday it will expand to 66 locations in Australia and seven in New Zealand, timing the growth to the arrival of the L03 and G9L in local showrooms. By year-end the company aims to be present in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory, with pricing and technical specifications for the G9L on the local market also due to be confirmed by then. The L03 already has a price anchor: AUD 41,900 before on-road costs.

The rollout carries an operational complication. Following the insolvency of distribution partner TrueEV, XPeng will review customer purchases case by case and address advertising commitments made previously. Building a dealer network, in other words, is not only about adding showrooms but about honouring obligations to existing buyers. And a announced network prepares the ground for sales without proving how well the new models will be received.

Germany Targets Raised, MONA L05 Stockpiled

In Germany, XPeng has lifted its 2026 volume target to 10,000 vehicles from an earlier plan of 8,000, according to Golem, with 22,000 units pencilled in for 2027. Both figures are corporate goals, not secured orders. Meanwhile the company reported Wednesday that the first 5,000 MONA L05 units had been completed on a new production line, with the Chinese market launch set for 29 October and deliveries due to begin at launch. That figure counts finished vehicles rather than orders or handovers, so it demonstrates production readiness but not demand.

Across all three fronts — robot batteries, Antipodean retail and the MONA L05 ramp — the same test applies. XPeng has to convert manufacturing preparation, local distribution structures and volume ambitions into actual customer deliveries. The battery line and the dealership build-out create the conditions; the proof comes later.
