Investors are being asked to hold two contradictory thoughts about XPeng at once. On one side sits a robotics division that just pulled in a nine-figure war chest at a valuation that would make most Chinese EV startups envious. On the other sits a core vehicle business that is losing money faster, guiding deliveries lower than Wall Street wanted, and watching its share price hover barely above a two-year floor.

The market's verdict so far has been unsparing. The stock, trading around €10.24 on Wednesday after a 2.9% bounce, remains down roughly 51% over the trailing twelve months and about 43% year-to-date. That puts it just a hair above its 52-week low of €9.42 and a staggering distance from its annual peak of €24.40. The equity is caught between two competing narratives, and neither appears to be winning decisively.

The Numbers Behind the Malaise

XPeng's second-quarter 2026 results, released against this backdrop, offer something for both bulls and bears. Revenue came in at 19.74 billion yuan (approximately $2.91 billion), an 8% year-over-year improvement. Vehicle deliveries jumped 65% quarter-over-quarter to 103,295 units, and gross margin hit a record 20.7%. On the surface, that is a company executing reasonably well.

But the bottom line tells a different story. The net loss widened to 1.34 billion yuan — roughly $200 million — nearly triple the 0.48 billion yuan loss recorded in the same period a year earlier. That is not a rounding error; it is a signal that the core automotive operation is burning cash at an accelerating clip even as its top line grows.

More troubling for the market was the company's own outlook. Management guided third-quarter deliveries to between 115,000 and 121,000 vehicles, a range that came in meaningfully below consensus expectations. The reaction was swift: US-listed shares fell 8.5% in a single session, while the Hong Kong listing dropped around 9% on the news, according to CNBC.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XPeng?

A Robotik Rescue — With Strings Attached

Just one day before the earnings hit the tape, XPeng's robotics arm closed a private placement raising more than $900 million, led by IDG Capital with participation from Gaorong Ventures, Tencent, and Alibaba. The post-money valuation stands at $6.3 billion, which Reuters describes as the largest single financing round in China's embodied AI industry. Co-President Brian Gu has argued that robotics margins will eventually surpass those of the vehicle business — a bold claim for a division that has yet to prove itself at scale.

The company plans to bring its humanoid robot, IRON, into series production by year-end, targeting monthly capacity of over 1,000 units and an ambitious goal of one million units annually by 2030. That is a vision with serious runway, but it is also a vision that currently lives outside the listed entity's core earnings power. The capital raised flows into a separate unit, not into the margin-thin vehicle operation that is generating the losses.

There is also a sector-wide cautionary tale developing. Unitree Robotics, which recently listed on the Shanghai exchange, has shed roughly $30 billion in market value within days — a nearly 50% decline from its peak. Robotik valuations across China are under pressure, which raises the question of whether XPeng's robotics narrative can hold its premium in a cooling environment.

Analysts Split, But the Drift Is Down

The analyst community responded to the Q2 print with a flurry of target cuts, though ratings remain mixed. JPMorgan trimmed its price target to $24 from $27 while maintaining an "Overweight" stance. Barclays reaffirmed "Underweight" and lowered its target to $14 from $15, explicitly citing the weak delivery guidance and intensifying competition. Goldman Sachs cut its target but kept a "Buy" rating. BofA moved to $18, and Citi to $21.40.

Even after these reductions, most targets sit well above the current share price — a sign that Wall Street has not abandoned the long-term thesis, even as near-term sentiment sours. The valuation math is similarly bifurcated. The price-to-sales ratio of 1.09 sits far below the historical median of 2.61, which some read as a discount. GuruFocus calculates a fair value of $26.24 per share. But the Altman Z-score of 0.73 flags elevated financial distress, a sobering counterweight to any value argument.

What Happens Next

Operationally, XPeng is not standing still. The G9L SUV is slated for a September 2026 launch in China, followed by the Mona L05 in the fourth quarter. The company also reported cumulative Mona-series deliveries of 310,000 units since the model's 2024 debut — an achievement that nonetheless does little to offset the soft Q3 guidance. International expansion continues as well, with the P7+ fastback entering the UAE market through Gulf Star Motors.

The fundamental tension remains unresolved. The vehicle business is growing but losing more money per quarter. The robotics division is attracting blue-chip capital and bold valuations, but has yet to translate either into meaningful revenue or margin contribution. For now, the market is pricing XPeng as an automaker with an expensive side project — and treating the side project's promise with growing skepticism. Whether that changes depends on whether IRON can deliver on its production targets, and whether the auto unit can arrest its widening losses without sacrificing growth. Neither outcome is guaranteed, and the stock's trajectory reflects that uncertainty.
